Offer Description

At the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business, we conduct research and education in business administration, industrial engineering and management, resource recovery, and building technology, as well as within the textile field: design, management, and technology.

The Faculty has five departments: the Department of Business Administration and Textile Management, the Department of Engineering, the Department of Resource Recovery and Building Technology, the Department of Textile Technology, and the Department of Design. There is also a department for the Textiles Labs. The Swedish School of Textiles and the Centre for Sustainable Society Development are other important parts of the Faculty. The Faculty is also the home to two doctoral education programmes: Resource Recovery and Textiles and Fashion.

Work with us at the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business

About the research project

The doctoral position is within the doctoral programme in Resource Recovery and will be part of the research group for biotechnology. The research project aims at the development of biological processes for the conversion of carbon-rich gas streams and organic residues into hydrogen, volatile fatty acids, and biogenic carbon dioxide. The research focuses on integrating anaerobic digestion, dark fermentation and high-solid fermentation processes. The research project contributes to the broader ambition of developing circular and carbon-efficient biotechnological systems that couple waste valorisation with sustainable gas and chemical production.

You will be supervised jointly by researchers at the University of Borås and the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE) and work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.

Your work tasks

In doctoral studentship employment, you conduct your own doctoral studies within the above-mentioned research project. The position includes both theoretical and experimental work within the field of industrial biotechnology, with emphasis on biological gas conversion and anaerobic fermentation systems. The research will involve the development, operation and evaluation of fermentation processes, as well as analytical monitoring and scientific dissemination of results.

In addition to your doctoral studies, teaching in the relevant field or other departmental duties constitute up to 20% of full-time. If such employment is carried out, the total duration of doctoral studies will be extended accordingly.

To be admitted to the doctoral programme in Resource Recovery, you must have a degree at an advanced level (Master's degree or equivalent) in chemical engineering, biotechnology, environmental engineering or a related field. You are to have documented knowledge in anaerobic digestion, gas fermentation or related bioprocesses and be able to communicate in writing and orally in English easily.

The position requires someone with good collaboration and initiative-taking qualities, an ability to work independently and in a structured way, as well as the ability to prioritise among different work tasks.

Merits:

  • Experience in laboratory work and knowledge of fermentation systems (e.g. work with bioreactors),

  •

  • Experience in analytical techniques for monitoring fermentation processes, such as Gas Chromatography (GC) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

  • Scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

Your employment

Type of employment: The doctoral position is for a fixed-term position until the licentiate degree (equivalent to two years of full-time study).
Start date: 1 June 2026 at the earliest
 Location: Borås, Sweden
 Reference number: PA2026/55

A new appointment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the appointment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Provisions regarding employment as a doctoral student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
