Work Plan

• Survey of the state of the art in predictive and analytical models applied to sports, ranging from statistical and linear approaches to deep neural networks. 

• Establishment of the evaluation setup, including collection and preparation of sports datasets (results, game statistics, athlete data) and definition of benchmarks and metrics appropriate to the target tasks. 

• Processing and structuring of sports data from diverse sources, including performance time series, game data, and statistical records.

 • Investigation of progressive modelling strategies, moving from linear models (regression, mixed models) towards neural network architectures, with comparative analysis of performance gains and interpretability. 

• Integration of the developed contributions into a functional prototype for sports analysis and prediction. 

• Coordination of activities with the remaining project partners. 

• Production of reports and scientific articles. 

Workplace: The work will be developed at NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics / Departamento de Informática / Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor David Semedo and Professor Nuno Correia. 6. Fellowship duration: The scholarship will last for 6 months, eventually renewable during the duration of the project.

The application must include the following documents: CV, copy of academic records/certificates* and proof of enrollment in a master program in Computer Science (At the time of the application, the proof of enrollment may be replaced by a Declaration of honour attesting to the commitment to enroll in a master's degree if selected for the scholarship and accept it).  Mandatory requirements: Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. Enrolment in a master programme in Computer Engineering. The documents proving the enrolment in a master programme in Computer Engineering must be presented, at the latest, up to the stage of contracting the scholarship, and before that, they may be replaced by a declaration of honor. 

Preferential factors:

 • Expertise in Machine Learning; 

• Experience in developing machine learning models for the sports domain; 

• Experience in Python programming; 

• Knowledge of Data Science.

Benefits

Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The amount of the monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to €1.040,98.


Eligibility criteria

Selection criteria: A classification will be made, on a scale of 0 to 20, taking into account the weighting of the following selection methods: a) curricular assessment (50%) and b) prior knowledge of the concepts and technologies relevant to the execution of the project (50%). The scholarship may not be awarded if applications are not suitable.

 Form of advertising/notification of results: The evaluation results proposed by the jury will be notified, up to 90 days after the deadline for the submission of applications, by email, of the results proposed by the jury, with access to the minutes and the final ranking list. After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision (prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure). The final decision will be taken after the expiry of the prior hearing period, again notified to all candidates by e-mail. Of this final decision the candidates can file a complaint within 15 working days (to the e-mail address used for the notification), or a hierarchical appeal, within 30 working days, addressed to NOVA.ID.FCT's Board through the address coord1@novaidfct.pt .
