The Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa) is calling for applications for 1 (one) research grant for a Master's student, within the scope of the research project “Democratic Innovations in Portugal”, funded bythe Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, coordinated by Doctor Roberto Falanga, from the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, under the following conditions:

Skills/Qualifications

Under the supervision of the project principal investigator, the grant recipient will carry out the following R&D activities: a) identify, catalog, and document practices of civic participation during the first 50 years of democracy in the country; b) collect and analyze empirical data on the role of civil society in this context.


Specific Requirements

Candidates should possess as mandatory requirements:

a) Enrollment or Declaration of Commitment to enroll for a Master's program in Sociology.

 

Candidates should have the following preferential requirements:

a) Proficiency in Portuguese;

b) Experience with qualitative approaches in case studies;

c) Scientific or professional experience in the field of civic participation.

Workplace: Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

Scientific Orientation: The grant holder will be supervised by Dr Roberto Falanga, the project coordinator.

Duration of the grant: The grant will last for 12 months and is not renewable.

Amount of monthly maintenance allowance and Social Security:

The monthly maintenance allowance is €1 090,98 (one thousand ninety euros and ninety-eight cents), paid monthly by bank transfer;

The grant holder to be hired may exercise their right to social security by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme, under the terms of the Research Grant Holder's Statute, with ICS-ULisboa assuming the costs resulting from the contributions provided for in that Statute.


Eligibility criteria

Selection methods and how they are valued:

The applicable selection methods will be a curricular assessment and a selection interview;

The selection interview will be carried out with the 2 candidates with the best score in the curriculum evaluation, provided they score 4.5 points or more.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of the terms of reference set out in paragraph 2 of this Notice, taking into account:

a) Curriculum evaluation, in light of the project’s objectives and the specific nature of the research work to be carried out, taking into account the preferred requirements listed in section 2.2 and other relevant factors, such as publications, participation in conferences, and involvement in civil society activities relevant to the project, scored on a scale of 1 to 10 points (30%);

b) Letter of Motivation, referred to in point 13.2 c), valued from 1 to 10 points (30%);

c) Other factors considered relevant, namely professional experience in the field of civic engagement, valued from 1 to 10 points (30%);

d) Selection interview to assess motivation and skills, scored on a scale of 1 to 10 (10%).

 

Composition of the Selection Board: Dr. Roberto Falanga (President, ICS-ULisboa), José Duarte Ribeiro (1st Standing Member, Middle East Technical University in Ankara, who will stand in for the President in his absence or incapacity), João Moniz (2nd Standing Member, University of the Azores).

 

Prior hearing and notification of interested parties: All candidates will be notified of the final result of the evaluation, sent to the email address used to send their application, and/or by mail, to the address on the Personal Data Form in Annex, through a list in descending order of the final evaluation obtained. Candidates may exercise the right of prior hearing, in writing, within ten working days from the notification. For that purpose, candidates may request the minutes to be sent by e-mail or consult the procedure documents in person at the Institute during office hours.

Applications must be accompanied, under penalty of exclusion, by the following documents, and no document that must be submitted at the time of application may be submitted after the deadline for applications: 

a) Personal data form and Declaration of Consent to Communicate Results via e-mail (see attached form); 

b) Detailed and up-to-date Curriculum Vitae;

c) Letter of Motivation justifying your interest in the research topics to be developed and the skills you think you can contribute to the project;

d) Proof of enrolment or Declaration of Commitment to enrol for a Master's program in Sociology;

e) Document(s) proving that the candidate fulfils the conditions required for the type of scholarship, namely certificate(s) of the academic degree(s) applied for, with final average, or proof that they have already applied for the respective certificate(s);

f) If the academic degree of Bachelor, required in this Notice as a requirement for admission was obtained abroad, you must submit one of the following documents:

  • Document proving that the Portuguese institution has granted recognition or equivalence or registration of the academic degree, under the terms of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16th August, in its current wording, and the respective regulations;
  • Document proving that you have already applied for recognition of the degree, which must be submitted by the deadline for receipt of applications, inclusive; or
  • A declaration of honour from the candidate that they will obtain recognition of the degree by the time the contract is signed;

g) Proof of having obtained recognition or equivalence or registration of the academic degree is a mandatory condition for signing the contract.
