The Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa) is calling for applications for 1 (one) Research Grant for a Master's student, within the scope of the research project NAMEThe Naming of Self and Others in African Languages: A Historical Ethnography of Central Angola (1840s–1880s), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (Reference 2024.15385.PEX), coordinated by Doctor Iracema Hilário Dulley, at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, under the following conditions:

Skills/Qualifications

Under the coordination of the project’s principal investigator, the grant recipient will carry out the following R&D activities: a) Prepare, structure, and standardize the textual corpus produced within the scope of the project, including file formatting, the creation of clean versions, and the conduct of exploratory tests using textual analysis tools; b) Annotate and extract contextual information regarding the ethnonyms present in the corpus, contributing to the organization of the data that will be included in the project’s database; c) Participate in the analysis of the material and in the drafting of an article co-authored with the other team members.


Specific Requirements

Candidates should possess as mandatory requirements:

a) Enrollment or Declaration of Commitment toenroll in a Master’s program in Social Sciences, Digital Humanities, Linguistics, or related fields.

Candidates should have the following preferential requirements:

a) Familiarity with linguistics or corpus analysis;

b) Knowledge of databases, XML, or related technologies;

c) Familiarity with text annotation processes in a digital environment;

d) Familiarity with open-access data management and publication platforms;

e) Basic understanding of network analysis;

f) Knowledge of Angolan history.

(FCT, I.P.), Regulation no. 950/2019, Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 241, of December 16 and, alternatively, Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Lisbon, approved by Order no. 6238/2020 published in Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 113, of June 12.

Workplace: Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

Scientific Orientation: The grant holder will be supervised by DrIracema Hilário Dulley, the project coordinator.

Duration of the grant: The grant will last for 12 months, possibly renewable up to the limits set out in Article 6 of the Foundation for Science and Technology's Research Grant Regulations or until the end of the project.

 Amount of monthly maintenance allowance and Social Security:

The monthly maintenance allowance is €1 090,98 (one thousand ninety euros and ninety-eight cents), paid monthly by bank transfer.

The grant holder to be hired may exercise their right to social security by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme, under the terms of the Research Grant Holder's Statute, with ICS-ULisboa assuming the costs resulting from the contributions provided for in that Statute.


Eligibility criteria

Selection methods and how they are valued:

The applicable selection methods will be a curricular assessment and a selection interview.

The selection interview will be carried out with the 3 candidates with the best score in the curriculum evaluation, provided they score 7,5 points or more.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of the terms of reference set out in paragraph 2 of this Notice, taking into account:

a) Curriculum evaluation, based on the objectives and specific nature of the work to be carried out in the NAME project, valued from 1 to 10 points (20%);

b) Letter of Motivation, referred to in point 13.2 c), valued from 1 to 10 points (25%);

c) Other factors considered relevant, namely 2 (two) letters of recommendation, valued from 1 to 10 points (15%);

d) Interview, valued from 1 to 10 points (40%).

 

Composition of the Selection Board: Dr. Iracema Hilário Dulley, Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (President) and Dr. Ana Rita Amaral, University of Coimbra (1st Effective Member), who will replace the President in her absence or incapacity, Dr. Daniel Alves, New University of Lisbon (2nd Effective Member), Dr. Inês Ponte, Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (1st Alternate Member), and Dr. Matheus Serva Pereira, Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (2nd Alternate Member).

 

Prior hearing and notification of interested parties: All candidates will be notified of the final result of the evaluation, sent to the email address used to send their application, and/or by mail, to the address on the Personal Data Form in Annex, through a list in descending order of the final evaluation obtained. Candidates may exercise the right of prior hearing, in writing, within ten working days from the notification. For that purpose, candidates may request the minutes to be sent by e-mail or consult the procedure documents in person at the Institute during office hours.
