- List of applicant’s scientific publications (submitted in full biobliographic description) and their copies (submitted together with a copy of journal’s cover and contents page); (if a scientific article in not yet published – a document issued by the editorial board of a scientific journal certifying the acceptance of an article for publication (after the reviewing procedure) and its manuscript)
- Recommendations by two scientists of the relevant science field. The recommendations have to be prepared in the calendar year when the applicant’s application is being submitted. A recommendation has to expressly specify the institution and the science field to which the applicant is recommended;
- Copy of passport page with personal data or a copy of identity card
- Electronic copy of the scientific research project in .doc or .docx format, if two topics are indicated in the application, then 2 scientific research projects need to be submitted
- A certificate issued by IELTS, TOEFL, CEFR or any other competent institution within the last 2 (two) years which certifies the level of the English language skills. Certificates indicating the level of the English language which have been obtained after completing English language training via various mobile apps (for example, Duolingo, Babbel, LinguaLift, etc.) shall not be accepted.

REQUIREMENTS DURING STUDIES
During his/her studies, a doctoral student should comply with the following conditions:
- Take approx. 5 study courses (30 ECTS);
- Write and publish at least 2 scientific articles;
- Participate in at least 2 conferences (one should be international);
- Write a dissertation.

Scholarships and tuition fees
Both state-funded places with scholarships and self-funded places are available.
The amount of the scholarship is determined by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and is as follows:
- EUR 1540 per month during the first year of studies;
- EUR 1628 per month during the second–fourth years of studies.
Additional financial support for doctoral students is provided by VMU Science Foundation. Every year, the University awards the most active doctoral students, organizes competitions to finance research trips, and supports projects carried out by doctoral students. Additional support may also be provided by other institutions upon application of doctoral students.
Tuition fees in all the science areas are as follows:
- EUR 12 680 per year for full-time studies;
- EUR 8 453 per year for part-time studies.
Eligibility criteria
Selection criteria
People are admitted to doctoral studies through an open competition. The competition for admission to doctoral studies takes place once a year – from April to September (depending on the science field). The most important criteria are the following:
- Published or accepted to be published scientific publications;
- A scientific research project that details what the applicant plans to research during his/her studies. It should be around 5–12 pages in length;
- Grade point average of the master’s diploma;
- Motivational interview, in which all the applicants must participate (in person or online). Usually, this interview is held at the end of June or in the middle of September (depending on the science field).
Selection process
- Motivational interview is held during the last week of June or the first two weeks of September (depending on the science field);
- A list of invited candidates is announced at the end of June or the end of September (depending on the science field);
- Signing of study contracts takes place at the beginning of July or at the end of September (depending on the science field);
- The studies begin on the 1st of October.

The standardised mathematics examination OMPT-D test
Holders of certain third-country foreign qualifications (interactive map ) are subject to an additional requirement to pass a standardised mathematics examination OMPT-D test in order to be considered for admission to a specific doctoral study field at Kaunas University of Technology.
The OMPT-D test is an online exam and can be taken anywhere in the world at any time of day. The OMPT-D test syllabus can be viewed here .
Registration & costs of the test
To take the exam candidate has to register in OMPT website , then select “Kaunas University of Technology” as the institution and the doctoral science field they plan to apply to.
Candidate may also choose to purchase practice materials, mock test or a bundle that includes everything.
The costs of the exam (and, if chosen, practice materials and / or mock test) are fully covered by a candidate directly to OMPT.
Results of the test
After the exam, each candidate will receive a certificate from OMPT with their exam results. Please, take into account, that it may take up to 8 working days to receive the exam results, so the candidate is fully responsible to plan the exam in advance and till the below mentioned deadline.
Successfully passing this exam means that candidate meet the mathematics requirement but it does not guarantee the admission to doctoral studies for the candidate.
Requirements for the test takers to be able to apply for doctoral studies at KTU
Participation in the admission to doctoral studies is only open to individuals who meet the following requirements:
The resulting OMPT-D certificate must be uploaded to the KTU admissions to doctoral studies system when registering to it (the system will be open on 8–19 June 2026). Candidates will not be able to register to KTU admission to doctoral studies system and submit application to doctoral studies without firstly including a copy of OMPT-D certificate.
