PhD Studentship in Hydrogen and Grid Integration (m/f/d)

The Chair of Sustainable Mobile Powertrains of the Technical University of Munich, located at Schragenhofstr. 31, 80992 Munich invites applications for a PhD studentship as a research associate in the area of hydrogen and grid integration.

Responsibilities:

- Integrate advanced hydrogen infrastructure and multi-level battery storage into a full-scale local island grid.

- Design and execute comprehensive testing phases for the microgrid, utilizing both synthetic load profiles and real-world operational scenarios.

- Conduct in-depth Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for a novel microgrid setup that combines green hydrogen production, fuel cells, and multi-level battery storage.

- Analyze and evaluate operational data to precisely quantify the system’s environmental impact using established LCA metrics, such as CO2 equivalents.

- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary project partners to feed LCA insights, alongside monitoring and diagnostic data, directly into the system's control architecture.

- Document research findings and publish them in scientific journals and conferences.

- Support academic teaching by assisting in courses focused on sustainability, modern drivetrains, and hydrogen technologies

Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in a relevant subject, e.g., electrical or mechanical engineering, mechatronics, that meets the requirements for enrolment for the PhD degree at Technical University of Munich

- Good knowledge of the operating principles of energy storage, specifically hydrogen technologies (electrolyzers, fuel cells) and battery systems.

- Experience in modelling, system control, or life cycle assessment (LCA) is advantageous.

- Hands-on experience in testing energy systems or working with microgrids is advantageous.

- Independent but co-operative work habits

- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)

- Good knowledge of German is beneficial


The Role:

The successful applicant will be employed as a research associate, paid in accordance with the rules of the collective bargaining agreement in the public service of the state of Bavaria (TV-L), pay bracket E13.
