Co supervision between Lille and Limoges (B. Wetzel and A. Mussot). The applicant will spend 50% of his/her time in Limoges and Lille

Advanced neuromorphic computing in multimode nonlinear photonic systems: leveraging time-division multiplexing and modal coupling for computational efficiency

Optical neuromorphic computing is emerging as a promising alternative to classical electronic architectures, offering advantages in terms of speed, energy consumption, and parallelism. Nonlinear photonic systems, in particular, make it possible to harness the richness of optical dynamics to perform complex operations inspired by biological neural networks.
However, current approaches face limitations in terms of scalability and computational efficiency. This project proposes to explore a new path by combining:
• Temporal multiplexing via a programmable delay line
• The complexity introduced by spatial multiplexing and nonlinear mode coupling in a multimode fiber
• Multidimensional, reconfigurable all-optical feedback to provide a memory effect, thereby significantly increasing neuromorphic computing capabilities
The goal is to significantly increase the density of processed information and computational efficiency, while exploiting a spatiotemporal dimensionality for the characterization of optical states.
