Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Program Mentor for the University Housing and Dining Services Admin at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Thrive Scholar Internship (TSI) Program is a professional development opportunity sponsored by University Housing & Dining Services (UHDS). In consultation with Diversity Initiatives and Programs (DIP), the Thrive Mentor supports the 14 Thrive Scholar Interns in their transition to college and their personal, academic, and internship success.
The TSI program mentor role is a live-in, peer mentorship student leadership position within Diversity Initiatives and Programs, a unit of University Housing and Dining Services (UHDS).
Supervised by the Diversity Initiatives and Program Coordinator, Mentors are expected to dedicate an average of approximately 20 hours per week over the academic year. Responsibilities fluctuate across the year and are not governed by fixed hourly schedules or timekeeping practices. The TSI Mentor role is structured as a co-curricular learning and leadership experience emphasizing mentoring, facilitation, reflection, and professional development. The TSI mentor is responsible for creating weekly professional development opportunities with support from the DIP Coordinator, conduct a biweekly one-on-one meeting with each intern, produce and engage with weekly journal entries, and assist with the overall leadership of the program. The TSI Program mentor will also assist in the selection of the new class of interns during the Spring 2027 term.

  • The university allows student employees to work up to 20 hours per week on campus. The TSI Mentor position is classified as an average 20-hour-per-week commitment. Other employment or major commitments require advance discussion and approval and should be considered secondary to the educational objectives of the mentor role.
  • The Thrive Scholar Internship Mentor Position is a one-year leadership opportunity, for the 2026 -2027 academic year. The experience period is for one full academic year (fall, winter and spring terms).

Position Duties
LEADERSHIP & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
  • Attend and assist the DIP Coordinator with the 2026-2027 TSI Cohort Orientation
  • Co-facilitate orientation sessions for the Internship Site supervisors and Scholar Interns.
  • Build rapport with Thrive Scholar Interns by meeting on a biweekly one-on-one basis, to inquire about students’ wellbeing, needs for guidance, as well as checking in about the journaling entries, and support interns with appropriate follow up
  • Guide, direct and advise interns by answering questions about the inner workings of the university or other relevant topics, completing campus referrals to offices and connecting them to resources, and providing perspective into the college experience when needed.
  • Co-lead the coordination of weekly professional development classes (every Monday 4-6pm) with the support of the DIP coordinator. This task includes:
  • Connecting with multiple offices across campus and collaborate with their members to schedule presenters from their areas of work.
  • Designing Canva presentations (check in, agenda, journaling, active break, current events and campus events sections, etc.)
  • Attend and co-facilitate Professional Development classes’ multiple sections (Check-in, current events, campus events, journaling section, among others); keep intern weekly attendance to ProDev Class.
  • Promote respectful, curious, and inclusive ways of communication and engagement during the activities that take place in each session.
  • Develop active breaks and journal questions that support the interns’ engagement in class, as well as promote their reflection upon their personal and collective experiences
  • Evaluate student engagement through weekly Journal entry monitoring, and through the completion of quarterly student Progress Reports process for each intern. Lastly, the mentor will provide input as to the quality of assessment tools as well as engage with feedback provided at the end of every term to then plan an appropriate course of action.


    • ADMINISTRATION

  • Collaborate, consult and meet regularly with the DIP Coordinator.
  • Use Teams, Outlook, Canvas, phone, in-person, and written communication as needed and directed; as well as check all points of communication at least once daily and respond as requested in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with UHDS Marketing Team to keep the Program Website up to date (Yearly basis)
  • Other administrative duties outlined via the DIP Coordinator

    • DEPARMENTAL SUPPORT
  • Assist with the selection of new Thrive Scholar Internship Program cohort in spring term.
  • Assist with the selection of a new Program Mentor in the spring term (if applies)
  • Participate in and/or attend in UHDS, DIP, and other events as required.
  • Peer Educator Leadership Conference
  • Speaking Justice
  • CEL Dialogues that interns are attending

    • TRAINING & ON-GOING DEVELOPMENT
  • Participate in fall training and staff orientation activities, which may include parts of the following:
  • TSI Program Mentor Training
  • Social Justice Training
  • UHDS Student Staff Training
  • Actively participate in all trainings as required through the academic year, including, but not limited to:
  • Winter and Spring terms on-going training opportunities, discussed and planned along with the DIP Coordinator
  • Community Engagement and Leadership (CEL) collaboration.
  • Peer Education Leadership Conference collaboration

    • Through training, supervision, and hands-on experience, the Thrive Scholar Internship Mentor will be supported in developing skills related to:
    • Building effective mentoring relationships and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
    • Facilitating reflective conversations and group discussions in inclusive and respectful ways
    • Navigating complex or challenging conversations with curiosity, care, and accountability
    • Supporting students through referrals and connection to campus resources
    • Time management, prioritization, and balancing leadership responsibilities with academic commitments
    • Giving and receiving feedback as part of ongoing learning and growth
    • Applying equity-centered and trauma-informed practices in peer leadership settings

    The DIP Coordinator will provide ongoing guidance, feedback, and support throughout the academic year to ensure the Mentor’s success in the role.
    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
    • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
    • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
      • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
      • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
      • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
      • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
      • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


    *International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with guidance and supervision


    • Experience may come from student organizations, employment, volunteer work, family and community roles, or lived experience.
    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
