Position Overview

The Temporary Housing Moving Assistant supports Housing & Residence Life initiatives by assisting in the operation and maintenance of the university’s residential facilities and assets. This role is responsible for the movement, setup, and teardown of a variety of items throughout campus housing, including furniture moves and trash removal. The position also performs light maintenance tasks, such as hanging blinds, replacing light bulbs, and installing ceiling tiles, while supporting general facility operations through equipment readiness. Work involves manual labor, on-the-job training, and the operation of university-issued vehicles.

This position requires the ability to work as a member of a team under limited supervision throughout the workday to meet expectations and deadlines.

Compensation & Schedule

  • Hourly Rate: $18 per hour
  • FTE: .80 (24-40 hours a week)
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Primary Location: Main Lawrence Campus.

Daily Reporting: While the Housing Office serves as the departmental hub, daily reporting locations will vary. Assistants will be assigned to projects across various buildings on the Lawrence campus and are expected to report directly to their designated project site at the start of each shift, as communicated by their supervisor.


Job Description

65% Operational Support (Moving, Delivery, & Event Setup)

  • Complete all duties assigned by supervisors and provide daily status updates regarding projects, as directed.
  • Load and unload trucks with furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Set up and dismantle tables, chairs, desks, and dressers.
  • Adjust bed heights and configurations in residence halls and scholarship halls.
  • Transport materials between housing facilities and other campus locations.

20% Light Maintenance & Furniture Repair
  • Perform assigned light maintenance tasks to support facility readiness.
  • Identify and remove damaged or obsolete furniture and equipment.
  • Assemble and repair housing furniture (e.g., desks, chairs, beds) using hand and power tools.
  • Assist Operations Coordinators with facility projects and hardware installations.

15% Administrative & Miscellaneous Support
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas while following all compliance and procedural requirements.
  • Maintain professionalism and act with personal responsibility.
  • Complete project-related paperwork and maintain accurate records.
  • Support Student Affairs and Housing units during peak periods.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental initiatives.

Position Requirements

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to reach, grasp, lift, and carry loads up to 75 lbs. (frequently) and heavier loads (occasionally) with or without accommodation.
  • Environmental Adaptability: Comfort working at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme indoor/outdoor temperatures.
  • Mobility: Ability to operate work-issued vehicles (box trucks, vans, cars) to transport self and materials to various campus housing locations.
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of hire (must be maintained throughout employment).
  • Must have weekday availability Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am – 4:30pm.

  • Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience as a member of a team, as evidenced in application materials. 
  • Experience in professional relocation, event setup, or light facilities maintenance, as evidenced in application materials. 
  • Experience working within a university, college, or large-scale multi-building campus environment, as evidenced in application materials.
