Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor in Business/Professional Writing
The English Department at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for an Appointment Stream Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate Professor position with a focus on business and professional writing to begin the fall semester of 2026. Position appointments are renewable, and career advancement is possible based on need, funding, and performance. This is a full-time position outside of the tenure stream. Teaching requirements will be 6 courses per academic year (typically 3-3 with no summer courses). Faculty development support includes an annual review process and ongoing mentorship. The appointment may be eligible for the bargaining unit of the faculty union.
Applicants must hold a PhD, MFA, or other terminal degree in English or a related field. Preferred qualifications include a record of superior academic teaching and relevant professional experience; demonstrated ability to develop curriculum within broadly defined learning objectives; effective communication skills; and experience mentoring students from varied backgrounds. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in support of an inclusive community are required.
The faculty member hired for this position can expect to regularly teach our intermediate level Written Professional Communication course, which is a course that allows students to create job search materials and explore writing genres used commonly in the workplace. It satisfies a writing-intensive general education requirement for the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and for the School of Computing and Information. We typically offer more than twenty sections a term because it is a core course for the Public and Professional Writing certificate and is recommended or required by several science, engineering, and rehabilitation science majors. The faculty member hired for this position may also have the opportunity to teach advanced Public and Professional Writing courses like Writing Proposals for Business and Language of Business and Industry.
The Composition program–one of four constituent programs in English (including Literature, Creative Writing, and Film)–offers an array of first-year composition courses and a Public and Professional Writing major and certificate. Our courses are also integral to the Digital Narrative and Interactive Design joint major with the School of Computing and Information, the Public Communication of Science and Technology certificate, and an interdisciplinary Disability Studies Certificate. We value flexible teachers who can create engaging courses that respond to the needs of our programs and to school-wide general education requirements. The candidate should demonstrate an aptitude for service and a willingness to contribute to the mission of the department. The teaching materials should indicate how students are taught about generative artificial intelligence use in the class and in the workplace.
Review of applicants will begin on January 7, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. The appointment requires administrative and budgetary approval. The position is scheduled to begin on August 15, 2026.
Teaching Load: 3/3 plus committee or supervisory assignment.
