Job Summary
The Controls Supervisor is responsible for leading the operation, maintenance, and optimization of the campus-wide Building Automation System (BAS) and associated controls infrastructure. This role oversees a team of controls technicians and ensures all HVAC and energy management systems operate efficiently, reliably, and in alignment with institutional goals. The Controls Supervisor plays a critical role in supporting mission-critical environments by improving system performance, reducing energy consumption, and ensuring occupant comfort and safety across a large, complex campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of controls technicians responsible for BAS, HVAC controls, and related systems.
  • Manage and maintain campus-wide Building Automation Systems, including programming, troubleshooting, and system optimization.
  • Oversee integration of new construction and retrofit projects into existing control systems.
  • Ensure proper operation of central plant equipment (chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps) through controls strategies and sequences.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain control standards, sequences of operation, and graphics for consistency across campus.
  • Troubleshoot complex control system issues, including network communication, sensors, actuators, and controllers.
  • Monitor system performance and implement energy conservation measures and continuous commissioning practices.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to staff on BAS platforms and control best practices.
  • Manage vendor relationships and oversee service contracts related to control systems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong knowledge of BAS platforms (e.g., Siemens, Phoenix and Niagara/Tridium, etc.).
  • Experience with programming, graphics, and system integration.
  • Experience and knowledge of HVAC systems, central plants, and energy management principles.
  • Experience and ability to read and interpret both mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • This position requires you to have and maintain a Texas Class “C” Operator’s Driver’s License and three (3) years of acceptable driving history.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical degree or certification in HVAC, controls, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Building Automation Systems and HVAC controls.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience in a large campus environment (university, hospital, or industrial facility).
  • Familiarity with open protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Experience with energy analytics, fault detection, and continuous commissioning tools.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, Advanced troubleshooting and analytical abilities.
  • Effective communication and coordination with multiple stakeholders, Project management and organizational skills, a commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.

Workplace and Eligibility Conditions
  • Occasionally involves exposure to inclement weather conditions, equipment, tools and chemicals used in the repair of HVAC equipment.
  • Alertness and careful attention is required to avoid injury to self and to others.
