Summary

The Student Lab and Research Assistant provides support to the Chemistry and Biology departments while contributing to active research projects. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory experience and present research findings at the Center for Great Lakes and Watershed Studies in BG.

Essential Functions

  • Calibrate lab equipment and learn to use basic lab equipment.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and/or written communication skills.
  • Maintain accurate lab notebooks and communicate project progress with faculty members in Chemistry and Biology.
  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically while making decisions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others in the community.
  • Wash, dry, store chemistry equipment and glassware.
  • Assist in the set-up and/or tear down for chemistry and biology student labs.
  • Assist in inventory of lab equipment.
  • Present research work at a conference organized by Center for Great Lakes and Watershed Studies.
  • Other duties as needed by Chemistry and Biology Professors.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered as a student taking 6 credit hours or more at Firelands or BG campus.
  • Responsible, dependable, trustworthy, and able to work independently.
  • Able to follow written/spoken directions.
  • This position involves physical activity, including standing for extended periods and moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
