Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a Student Teaching Assistant to support the instructor and students in IT 1510: Introduction to Linux during in-person class meetings. The teaching assistant will provide real-time technical support to students, primarily assisting with virtual machine setup, Linux command-line troubleshooting, and lab navigation during the Tuesday/Thursday 1:00–2:15 PM class sessions.


Summary of Responsibilities

  • Assist students during class with virtual machine setup and troubleshooting (VMware / VirtualBox).
  • Help diagnose and resolve Linux operating system and command-line issues during lab activities.
  • Provide one-on-one technical support while the instructor is teaching.
  • Assist students with navigating course tools, files, and lab instructions.
  • Communicate recurring technical issues to the instructor to improve lab materials.
  • Maintain a professional and supportive classroom presence.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

  • Must be a current UVU student.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Have successfully completed IT 1510 or have extensive knowledge of Linux and VMs (IT 1600 preferred but not required).


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Linux fundamentals, including basic commands (ls , cd , chmod , chown , nano/gedit , package management).
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware Workstation, VirtualBox, or similar).
  • Ability to troubleshoot common VM issues (networking, shared folders, permissions, boot problems).
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, especially in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to assist multiple students efficiently during lab sessions.
  • Commitment to maintaining student confidentiality and academic integrity.
