About the Job:
The individual in this position will work mainly with Dr. Cesar A Corzo and the MSHMP team with the goal of contributing to continue to make MSHMP a large national and relevant project in the US swine industry. We plan to select and hire one Researcher (e.g. replace) to perform needed research on infectious disease epidemiology using sequence data collected or generated in relation to activities of the Morrison Swine Health Monitoring Project. This position will focus research efforts on sequence comparison, virus evolution, study design, data management and analysis for different projects focused on swine disease control and prevention. Therefore, an individual who has bioinformatics, molecular biology, and programming experience will certainly be of great value.
Duties and Responsibilities:
50% -Conduct research and provide technical assistance to PI, students, and trainees on data analyses related to food animal disease molecular epidemiology.
10%-Generate and organize research data for future projects.
10% -Collaborate with PI in the generation and testing of hypotheses and data analysis, writing of papers, grants, reports, and preparation of presentations and lectures.
10% -Attend, participate, or present at laboratory meetings seminars, graduate and undergraduate lectures, and conferences as needed.
10% -Perform miscellaneous office duties as assigned by the PI including but not limited to, the organization and coordination of meetings and projects.
10% -Build and maintain frequent communication with collaborating faculty members and non-UMN collaborators and if required traveling to domestic/international destinations to meet with collaborators and collect data.
Qualifications

Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, epidemiology and at least 2 years of related work experience or a combination of relevant education and work experience to total 6 years.
- Experience analyzing sequence-based datasets, including 16S microbiome datasets
- Experience developing dashboards, in particular Shiny apps
- Ability to troubleshoot and make progress independently
- Strong intra-team communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree in a related field (bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, epidemiology
- Successful candidates will combine strong computational and statistical skills with a solid understanding of biological systems. Key competencies include proficiency in bioinformatics and data science methods, experience with sequence-based analyses and workflow development, fluency in programming and version-controlled research practices, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. The role requires independence, rigor, and a commitment to reproducible science, enabling the lab and department to generate high-quality, impactful research outputs.
- Expertise in the following: Molecular biology, virology, epidemiology, bioinformatics, data science, and machine learning.
About the Department
The Veterinary Population Medicine department (VPM) specializes in population and individual animal medicine focusing on large animals’ health and production, biomedical science, and ecosystem and public health. Our faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Faculty provide clinical instruction in medicine, diseases, surgery, production medicine, public health and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and are home to faculty in clinics, epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. Faculty members provide clinical services for animals, diagnostic services to animal owners, and continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners.
Teaching
The Veterinary Population Medicine Department provides clinical instruction in medicine, surgery, production medicine, diagnostics and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and is home to faculty in epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. The department provides residency training in large animal medicine, surgery, pathology, and veterinary public health and preventive veterinary medicine and works with students in the Veterinary Sciences, and Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs.
Research
Faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, eliminate and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
Service
Faculty members provide clinical services for animals in the Leatherdale Equine Center and Large Animal Hospital, as well as diagnostic services to animal owners through the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. They consult with producers and veterinarians in the community, provide continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners, and play an active role in the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, John Fetrow Dairy Education Center, Equine Center, and the Swine Disease Eradication Center.

Pay Range: $27.88 - $30.05; depending on education/qualifications/experience
