The NAS Student Communications Assistant works under the supervision of the Native American Studies Chair and the Administrative/Financial Coordinator. This position supports departmental communications and outreach (social media, website, newsletters, flyers) and provides front-office support and customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Represent NAS in a welcoming, professional manner.
Manage and post content to NAS social media accounts.
Update NAS website content (announcements, pages, uploads).
Create and distribute flyers and communications materials using templates.
Compile and send the weekly NAS newsletter.
Monitor and route messages from the NAS department email.
Maintain spreadsheets for communications, events, and tracking.
Answer phones, greet visitors, and direct inquiries.
Sort and distribute mail; deliver daily mail to mailboxes.
Assist with NAS events (set-up, take-down, check-in).
Staff NAS tabling and outreach events.
Run basic departmental errands and deliveries.
Learn and use communication software and office tools.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Spring 2026 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.
Must attach Spring 2026 class schedule.
Communications Timing Expectations:
Weekly: Prepare and distribute department NAS newsletter.
Ongoing: Post time-sensitive announcements across platforms.
Time-Sensitive items include NAS events and last-minute updates; Academic deadlines and forms; Student opportunities; Department notices and schedule changes.
Essential Functions:
Communicate clearly and professionally with diverse audiences.
Work independently and as part of a team.
Meet recurring, time-sensitive communications deadlines.
Prioritize tasks with short turnaround times.
Accurately maintain spreadsheets and records.
Learn new communications tools with training.
Stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
Follow university policies and maintains confidentiality.
