The Engagement in Science and Nature Program at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology offers a wide range of projects, educational resources, and learning experiences for children through adults, in person and on the web, in school, and in informal learning environments. The mission of the Cornell Lab K-12 program is to provide resources and training to educators as they engage students in investigations and outdoor experiences focused on birds.

About the Position

The position is located within the Lab of Ornithology, in Ithaca, NY. The Project Assistant supports the K-12 Program Team in outreach and communication to educators through social media, eNews, websites, marketing, curriculum support and professional development initiatives. Collaborate with the project team in developing and editing science curricula, guiding educators in use of citizen science and inquiry-based teaching, and representing the Cornell Lab at state, regional, and national education conferences. Interact with the public and participants by phone and email. Meet project deadlines, working under the guidance of the supervisor and with the project team. Understand the needs of, and work to support the program's interactions with, K-12 schools, afterschool and youth development organizations.

This is a full-time position, 39 hour per week. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely 1 days per week and on-site 4 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke, or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.

What you'll Need

• Associates degree or 2 years of college coursework, and 1-2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in Communications, marketing, and social media skills, preferably related to science communication.
• Effective organizational skills, self-motivation, initiative, and communication skills (both written and verbal). Desire to communicate with diverse audiences through various outlets should be supported by experience and knowledge of educational approaches.
• Experience that demonstrates creativity and problem-solving skills. Mastery of common computer skills including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and use of social media and the internet.
• Provide high level of initiative to anticipate needs of program and fulfill program objectives with minimal supervision, and multi-task while working under pressure.
• Must be accurate, methodical, well- spoken, and have strong proofreading and editing skills.
• Flexibility required.
• Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of the project team. Ability to travel
• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

• Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or science communication.
• Knowledge of inquiry-based science preferred.
• Communications, graphic design, writing, social media, and webpage development highly preferred.
• Public speaking and graphic design experience helpful. Spanish fluency preferred.
