Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Heart Failure Research Institute (HFRI)

The Heart Failure Research Institute (HFRI) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian seeks a highly motivated Research Fellow to support and lead investigator-initiated clinical research studies in heart failure and related cardiovascular conditions.  

This fellowship provides immersive training in academic clinical research within a hospital-based setting. The Research Fellow will work closely with HFRI faculty investigators and the Research Manager to support study development, execution, and dissemination. This role offers hands-on exposure to study design, regulatory processes, patient-facing research activities, data analysis, and scientific publication.  

The Fellow will function as a key scientific and operational partner within a multidisciplinary team that includes clinical research coordinators, a regulatory manager, a biostatistician, and a data manager.  

This position is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in cardiology, internal medicine, or academic medicine.

Primary Responsibilities:

•    Study Development & Scientific Leadership
o    Contribute to the design and development of investigator-initiated clinical trials (IITs)
o    Assist in drafting study protocols, case report forms, and study-related documents
o    Collaborate with the biostatistics team on study design and analytic planning
o    Participate in feasibility assessments and study start-up processes

•    Clinical Research Execution
o    Support study oversight in collaboration with Research Manager, CRCs, and the Principal Investigator
o    Assist with patient screening, consent discussions, and study visits when appropriate
o    Participate in clinical procedures relevant to the study
o    Ensure adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and institutional standards

•    Data & Analysis
o    Collaborate with the data manager and biostatistician to ensure data quality and integrity
o    Conduct preliminary data analysis under statistical guidance
o    Participate in interpretation of study findings

•    Academic Productivity
o    Lead and/or contribute to abstract submissions for national and international conferences
o    Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
o    Present research findings at institutional and external scientific meetings

•    Multicenter Engagement (if applicable)
o    Assist in coordinating communication across participating sites
o    Support investigator meetings and data harmonization efforts

Training & Mentorship:

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will receive:

•    Direct mentorship from HFRI faculty investigators
•    Exposure to study lifecycle management (from concept to close-out)
•    Structured feedback on scientific writing and presentation skills
•    Opportunities to build a competitive academic portfolio

Minimum Qualifications:

•    MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree (or currently enrolled in an accredited residency/fellowship program), or advanced clinical/scientific training relevant to cardiovascular research
•    Strong interest in academic cardiology or cardiovascular research
•    Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment
•    Excellent organizational and communication skills Commitment of at least two years

Preferred Qualifications:

•    Prior experience in academic clinical research or scholarly research projects
•    Experience with investigator-initiated studies
•    Basic understanding of clinical trial methodology and GCP
•    Prior abstract, poster, or manuscript authorship
•    Interest in pursuing a physician-scientist or academic research career
