Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Assistant Sports Editor for the Orange Media Network at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Sports Assistant Editor is responsible for assisting the Sports Editor in creating student-produced content for the Sports section of The Daily Barometer, its website and the OMN Sports social media channels.
Students in this role will develop these essential skills for future employment: communication, critical thinking, professionalism.
The Assistant Sports Editor employment dates:
  • Full Start: Sept. 8, 2026 to June 15, 2027

Pay Rate:
  • Full Start: 10 hours per week, at $652 per month

Position Duties
  • Assist in curating, pitching, assigning, editing and reporting stories for the sports section of The Daily Barometer, both in print and online, in a timely manner (stories will include investigations, cover stories, hard news, breaking news and relevant feature stories).
  • Assist in updating and contributing to social media and web sports content at least five days per week with stories, photos, interactive features, scores and schedules under the direction of EIC and marketing
  • Assists in ensuring deadlines are met as assigned
  • Assist in ensuring that all students who submit articles and social media content receive coaching and feedback prior to publishing, so that they can improve and learn
  • Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks
  • Assist Sports Editor in planning and holding weekly meetings to assign tasks and oversee other sports coverage
  • Assist as needed in producing print issues and ensuring properly prepared print files are sent to the commercial printer by deadline
  • Assist in doing readouts and payroll as assigned by the Sports Editor or EIC
  • Assist the Sports Editor in hiring, supervising and managing a team of writers

Work with Sports Editor to coordinate live sports broadcasts for KBVR-FM by:
  • Coordinating schedule with station manager before each season starts
  • Recruiting and coordinating announcers
  • Taking and staying up to date on KBVR-FM DJ training and ensuring announcers do the same
  • Promoting broadcasts on social media
  • Uploading recorded audio to web after the game

  • Communication
    • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
    • Ensure you are using, checking and responding to project management platform (Basecamp, Discord, etc.)
    • Work 10 regular in-office hours each week for Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
    • Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
    • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
    • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
      • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
      • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
      • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
      • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
      • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

    *International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
    Additional Required Qualifications
    • Knowledgeable in newsgathering, news values and fact-checking strategies
    • Willing to learn AP Style, particularly for sports, and to work within the SPJ Code of Ethics
    • Willing to learn page design software
    • Proficient in or willing to learn audio editing and uploading
    • Proficient in or willing to learn broadcast rules and techniques
    • Is organized and reliable
    • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking
    • Is experienced with coaching and with giving and receiving feedback
    • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
    • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners
    • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 6 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 12 months or equivalent
    • Must complete all elements of the On-Boarding Curriculum before beginning role
    Preferred (Special) Qualifications
    • Had been a paid member of staff of the cohort for at least one term
    • Had prior attendance and participation in OMN Training Camp
    • Previous newspaper or media experience
