Position Summary

The Recreational Services Department has an exciting opportunity for a highly-motivated, creative, team-oriented Operations Specialist to oversee the Club Sports Program. This dynamic position will build on the foundation that has been set over the past few years and take the program to the next level. Building block structures are in place and ready for your stamp including a new Sport & Recreational Club Council, new website with new club resources, and new university club funding being allocated through this position. The Operations Specialist will provide strategic development, administration and leadership for the Club Sports Program.

 As Recreational Services is housed in Student Affairs, it is fully anticipated that the Operation Specialist will be highly motivated in helping all students achieve success and reach their goals by engaging with students using models and best practices as established by Student Affairs professionals.


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Planning, organization, execution, and evaluation of a formal training program for club sport officers and coaches.
  • Provide supervision, direction, and development for Graduate Project Assistant – Club Sports.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Department South Campus and Johnson Center facility scheduling coordinators regarding facility reservations and game management.
  • Manage clubs and ensure all University travel and purchasing requirements are followed.
  • Assist with large special events as needed.
  • Coordinate and administer club sport program marketing efforts.
  • Oversight of club sport budget management and allocations.
  • Chair the Sport & Recreational Club Council.
  • Determine and recommend the purchase of needed equipment and supplies.
  • Oversees the budgeting and fiscal management process of the club sport program.
  • Directly responsible for managing the club sport program budget.
  • Participates in the sourcing, soliciting, and/or acquisition of funding, as appropriate to the operating mode of the unit.
  • Actively recruit underrepresented and special population individuals for program participation.
  • Participate in the planning and development of regional/national sporting events and tournaments.
  • Implement technology resources to support program needs and requirements.
  • Oversee the enforcement of administrative and operational policies and procedures in club sports.
  • Complete monthly and semester reports as required by Recreational Services administration.
  • Ensure all student athletes are eligible based on their sport’s national governing body and UNM policy.
  • Maintain relationship with UNM Athletic Department for shared use of facilities and access to athletic department trainers and equipment storage.
  • Coordinate with Student Affairs College Enrichment and Outreach Programs for community outreach involving club sport student athletes.
  • Maintain and keep the UNM Club Sports Handbook current.
  • Collaborate with the Student Activities Center pertaining to student organizations.
  • Co-manage the department’s summer youth programs with the Operations Specialist – Intramural Sports.
  • On occasion, could be expected to work evening hours or weekends to support Club Sport and Recreational Services events.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Recreation, Sports Management, or related field
  • Experience with student organization programming, risk management, and fiscal management
  • Basic understanding of the various components that make up a Club Sports Program
  • Proven effective leadership, management, and mentoring for a student development focus program
  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, & AED or ability to obtain within six months of hire
  • Experience with summer youth programming, risk management, and fiscal management
  • Experience building a Club Sports from the ground up
  • Experience working collaboratively with various campus offices
  • Involvement in NIRSA or other professional associations
