Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is seeking an experienced clinician in Critical Care at the Associate Professor or Professor Level to serve as Division Chief for Pediatric Critical Care. The successful candidate will have a proven record of accomplishment in leadership, excellent clinical service and patient care, research and scholarship, education, program development and mentorship. Growth and development of junior faculty within the division is a priority for the department and offers tremendous leadership opportunity. 

This innovative, academic leader will have program oversight responsibility for the Pediatric Critical Care Division, including pediatric/neonatal ECMO and the Pediatric Sedation Services. They will also oversee and participate in ongoing research in the division  UNM is a member of the NIH Clinical and translational Science Award Consortium since 2010 and is a leader in biomedical research for the state. Now in the fourth cycle of funding, the new Southwest Center for Advancing Clinical & Translational Innovation (SW CACTI) is a collaboration between University of Arizona (U of A) and UNM;  this is a seven-year, $43.6 million federal grant to fund a broad range of research programs aimed at improving the health of people living in New Mexico and Arizona and training a new generation of scientists and staff In addition, Department of Pediatrics is part of two large NIH funded networks: Neonatology Research Network and IDeA State Pediatric Clinical Trail Network.
The position includes patient care responsibilities in a state of the art, 20 bed multi-disciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which averages 1000 admissions per year.  UNM is the state’s level 1 trauma center, and is the main referral center for the entire state and surrounding regions. The program benefits from a full complement of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties including pediatric surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric ENT, pediatric urology, pediatric orthopedic surgery and pediatric anesthesiology. Clinical services include pediatric sedation service (inpatient and outpatient), and the pediatric/neonatal ECMO program.
UNM serves a diverse patient population and is the only Level 1 Trauma center for the State. The Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Division have a long tradition of providing outstanding, comprehensive care to the children of New Mexico. The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine trains 67 pediatric residents.  Pediatric fellowships at the institution include pediatric emergency medicine, and neonatology, pediatric hospitalist and pediatric child abuse with opportunities for further fellowship program development.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Able to obtain medical licensure(s) in the state of New Mexico.
  • Board certified/Board eligible in Pediatric Critical Care.
  • Ten years clinical experience.
  • Experience with pediatric and neonatal ECMO.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with professional education, teaching, and research.
  • Experience with care of the pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and trauma patient.
  • Evidence of leadership roles in academic medicine.
  • Experience mentoring of junior faculty.
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
