Job Summary
This position is primarily clinical, providing essential support for individuals with unhealthy substance use. Under the general supervision of the Addiction Care Team (ACT) Director and in alignment with the policies and procedures of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the ACT Nurse Practitioner (ACT NP) plays a vital role as an advanced practice provider and clinical instructor. The ACT NP delivers patient-centered, evidence-based addiction treatment, ensuring high-quality care that addresses substance use disorders and, when applicable, co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, the NP supports patients in achieving their treatment goals.
The NP also contributes to the continuous improvement of clinical services through participation in staff meetings, quality improvement initiatives, education, and assurance activities.
The ACT consult service partners with hospital-based medical teams to provide comprehensive addiction care. This includes initiating evidence-based medication treatments, diagnosing substance use disorders, offering motivational interviewing and harm reduction strategies, and facilitating care coordination tailored to each patient’s needs and goals. The service is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including an attending physician, nurse practitioners, licensed vocational nurses, patient navigators, addiction medicine fellows, and other trainees.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $105.50 - $136.83 (NP2) and $100.52 - $130.43 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description
The UCSF Addiction Care Team (ACT) is a vital resource for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. ACT connects patients with community services, advocates for resources such as housing and food, and offers evidence-based addiction services. The team evaluates and diagnoses unhealthy substance use, providing appropriate services that meet patient goals. They offer medication, harm reduction, and residential treatment, and link patients to community healthcare and addiction treatment programs. ACT aims to reduce the stigma and harms of substance use through patient-centered communication and using patient narratives to decrease stigma among providers and staff. The team is composed of experienced professionals who understand the diverse experiences and backgrounds of patients affected by substance use.
Required Qualifications
Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing approved or verified school of nursing with a master’s degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
Nurse Practitioner 1 (less than six (6) months of experience as an NP):
- Prior work experience as an RN or an NP in a substance use disorder care setting that includes harm reduction and contingency management training specific to substance use disorders.
- Experience with motivational interviewing.
- Prior experience linking patients to rehabilitation community resources and patient education as a member of interdisciplinary team
- Experience working with patients with complex psychosocial situations and unhealthy substance use and deescalating situations.
Nurse Practitioner 2 (at least six (6) months of NP experience):
- A minimum of 6 months of experience as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) treating individuals with substance use disorders—including alcohol, opioid, stimulant, and benzodiazepine use disorders—in San Francisco or another major metropolitan area, preferably within an interprofessional team setting.
- NP experience initiating, titrating, and continuing methadone, buprenorphine, extended-release buprenorphine, naltrexone, extended-release naltrexone, and acamprosate.
- Demonstrated skills diagnosing and managing substance use disorders.
- Harm reduction and contingency management training specific to substance use disorders.
- Experience working with patients with complex psychosocial situations and unhealthy substance use and deescalating situations.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to develop solutions and recommend changes and follow through with implementation.

- California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction
- California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
- California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number including Schedule II furnishing privileges
- NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role
- Adult Inpatient (ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC) or Psychiatric Mental Health PMHNP-BC .
- California Driver License (if required for position)
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Additional required AHA certifications: None additional to BLS
- Additional required certifications (such as ENLS): none
UCSF Medical Center and Campus require certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
