Position Summary

Earth and Planetary Sciences is seeking a responsible, self-motivated student to provide assistance with our Mineral collection. This will include photographing and weighing samples and entering the data into an Excel spreadsheet or database. 
Identifying samples that are radioactive using a Geiger counter and ensuring that they are double-bagged in Ziploc bags and stored in the radioactive mineral room. 
Developing a protocol to track samples when they are checked out of the collection and returned, to ensure a rigorous chain of custody for the samples. 
Liase with the UNM Radiation Safety staff to ensure that storage of radioactive samples that are archived and are being used actively for research meet all necessary safety criteria. 
Preparing samples for analysis by scanning electron microscopy and chemical analysis using ICP-MS. This will include following laboratory protocols for the separation of airborne dust samples from passive collection filters that have been deployed in the field, including but not limited to ultrasonic agitation, centrifuging, drying, and weighing samples. 
Observation and analysis of samples using scanning electron microscopy and preparation of samples for ICP-MS analysis including acid digestion, dilution, and analysis. Processing and analysis of data for trace elements obtained by ICP-MS including plotting data using Excel and preparation of results for poster and oral presentations. 

Must possess the ability to work independently, organize time efficiently, and communicate professionally with faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. Applicants should feel comfortable both requesting aid and receiving supervision from the current collections manager and any overseeing faculty and/or staff.

-Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs of materials
