Brief Summary of Work for this Position
MarineQuest Summer Program Overnight Instructors live and work in the residential hall. Overnight Instructors are with students from the late afternoon through the early morning. Overnight Staff will communicate relevant information with Day Staff each morning and afternoon to ensure students’ success. Overnight Instructors conduct recreational activities for individual and group participation and supervise downtime and meals. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Graduation from high school
  • Ability to work outdoors in Wilmington, NC summer conditions
  • Ability to navigate uneven surfaces and terrain, such as sand, sports fields, and boardwalks
  • Prior experience leading recreational activities for youth
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience supervising students ages 9 – 17 years old
  • Ability to carry 35 lbs
  • Completion of 2 years toward a bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Lifeguard Certification
  • Knowledge of marine sciences is a plus
Required Certifications or Licensure
  • First Aid and CPR Certification must be obtained by June 1, 2026.
  • Must complete online training modules and attend MarineQuest in-person staff training held June 1st- – June 5th, 2026.
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
College/School Information
Work Hours Sunday: 2:00pm-10:30pm; Monday - Thursday: 6:30am - 8:30am & 3:30pm - 10:30pm; Friday 6:30am - 9:00am. Occasional opportunities for overtime Friday/Saturday.

Hours Per Week 40 hours plus ~8 hours of overtime

Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department needs with the possibility of continuation. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning February 9, 2026. The first offers will be given in mid-March. Pay varies by position and is based on qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Additional compensation includes housing for the duration of the position and meals when working.
