Reporting to the Director of Business Operations, the Business Operations Manager is responsible for cross-functional management and administration of resources for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, including but not limited to finance, processes and operations, human capital, research facilities, systems, and communications. They are responsible for aligning strategy with Departmental resources. Manage relationships within the organization and, at times, relationships with other Departments.

This role manages related day-to-day business operations and is responsible for identifying opportunities for organizational improvement, providing expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, expense control, and revenue enhancement. Proactively identifies and resolves operational issues. The Manager frequently interacts with Departmental Faculty concerning related operational and financial inquiries. Helps to maintain relationships within the Department and with key external partners.

The Manager supports the Department Chair, Director, Vice Chairs and related earnings operations by ensuring clear financial management through effective operational improvement, budgeting, regular financial reporting, and analysis. Responsibilities include tracking financial commitments, managing fiscal processes, and completing monthly reconciliations of related Human Resources and financial transactions. Collaborates with HR and the Director of Business Operations on workforce planning, overseeing onboarding for new staff hires, and ensuring appropriate staffing levels, including Lecturers and Graduate Associates, each semester.

The Manager serves as the Cost Center Manager, advising faculty, staff, and students on University, College, and Departmental policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate reconciliation throughout the Fiscal Year. They apply and/or implement appropriate university and financial policies, approve transactions, and serve as a liaison for grants managers focusing on externally funded awards and related financial data tracking. Ensures compliance with internal control structures such as segregation of duties, mandatory approvals, and required reconciliations.

Within the Department, the Manager works to resolve day-to-day operational issues, supervises department staff supporting functions including financial operation services and administrative assistance, while setting annual performance goals and benchmarks to promote growth and efficiency. The Manager will partner with the Director of Business Operations to provide and develop leadership, strategic planning, and team building to create a high-performing team and work culture to best leverage staff competencies that will promote long term goal setting and accountability. The Manager will mentor Departmental administrative staff where and as appropriate.

The Manager will aid in managing Departmental staff awards and recognition. The Manager will collaborate with the Director of Business Operations to run and/or co-lead meetings with staff leaders and full Departmental Staff meetings.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Level Degree in Business Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience; minimum of 5 years of relevant business operations experience in higher education. Considerable experience using MS Excel.

Desired Qualifications: Proficiency with Workday; experience in managing budgets, financial reconciliation, advising leaders on operations, and financial decision making; supervisory experience is strongly preferred.


Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $88,300 to $115,350. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
