Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a dynamic, innovative, and dedicated educator to join the Wellness and Physical Activity (WPA/L 101) program as a 9-month, non-tenure-track Lecturer. The position begins in August 2026.
This faculty member will play an important role in supporting the university's required WPA/L 101 general education course by teaching both Wellness lecture courses and a variety of physical activity courses. In addition to teaching and providing service to the program and school, the successful candidate will initially serve as the WPA Program Coordinator.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Candidates must hold, at minimum, an earned master's degree in wellness, exercise science, kinesiology, health education, physical education, or a closely related field at the time of employment.
  • Applicants should also demonstrate an established record of, or clear potential for, successful academic instruction in wellness and physical activity or similar courses.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate:
  • Successful teaching experience in higher education.
  • Experience teaching physical activity courses across a variety of activity types.
  • Evidence of effective instruction across multiple modalities and settings, including asynchronous online formats.
  • Evidence of successful program and course development, including contributions to curriculum design, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Active engagement in professional associations.
  • Ability to advocate for the inclusion of a Wellness & Physical Activity requirement within general education.
  • Strong organizational skills, including evidence of detail-oriented approaches to tasks such as course scheduling.
  • Experience with AI use in educational and professional settings


Required Certifications or Licensure:
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The WPA/L 101 Physical Activity and Wellness course is a required course in UNCW's University Studies (General Education) program and provides students with theoretical knowledge, fundamental concepts and practical experience in the principles, assessment, development, and lifelong maintenance of personal wellness. This course presents a focus on effecting positive changes in personal health behaviors for improved quality of life and engages students in physical activity for wellness. The WPA/L 101 program is housed within the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS) which is a large and growing academic unit with over 1800 students and 60 full time faculty.
The SHAHS currently has six undergraduate degree programs:
  • Public Health
  • Exercise Science
  • Healthful Living and Fitness Education
  • Tourism, Recreation, & Sport
  • Recreation Therapy
  • Respiratory Therapy


The SHAHS also has Master degrees in:
  • Athletic Training
  • Healthcare Administration
  • Gerontology

The SHAHS also supports:
  • Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) through the Watson College of Education
  • Masters of Education concentration in Physical Education and Health through the Watson College of Education

Minors are offered in:

  • Yoga Studies
  • Assistance Dog Training
