| Position Summary | This position performs highly skilled and complex electrical work using advanced knowledge, technical expertise, and specialized tools in the maintenance, repair and installation of electrical wiring, apparatuses, systems, fixtures, motors, industrial instruments, electronic fire alarm systems, and other related equipment to support the university’s electrical distribution system and ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus facilities for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. |
| Required Qualifications | High School diploma or GED. Possession of a current State of Michigan Journeyman Electrical License. Possession of a valid driver’s license and must meet the provisions of a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Possession of a mobile aerial work platform certification. Possession of a confined spaces certification. Ability to become an approved driver under the university’s vehicle policy. Comprehensive knowledge of electrical principles in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA) regulations. Ability to work independently and in a team environment and to provide a high level of service excellence to campus customers. Ability to work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches. Ability to effectively use technology to access e-mail and the internet. Demonstrated ability to follow and/or interpret oral or written directions. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image. Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills. Ability to be on-call. Ability to lift 75 pounds. Ability to safely use a ladder and scaffolding. Ability to work in confined spaces. Ability to safely use power equipment and hand tools. Ability to work outdoors in all seasons. Ability to work an 8-hour shift, overtime, weekends, nights, and holidays. |
| Preferred Qualifications | Four years of experience with electrical systems, including Medium Voltage (13,200 volts) electrical distribution, as defined by the 2020 National Electric Code, Article 311.2. Demonstrated experience with Simplex, Siemens and Edwards electronic fire alarm systems. Demonstrated experience with American with Disabilities Act electronic door operating systems. Demonstrated experience with fire protection systems. Demonstrated experience with MIOSHA safety regulations. |
| Duties & Responsibilities | Maintains, repairs, and installs electrical wiring and fire alarm systems. Maintains and repairs medium voltage (13,200 volts) electrical distribution systems. Installs conduit, branch circuits, main feeder conductors, variable frequency drives, motor circuits, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment typically in 120/208, 120/240 and 277/480 voltage applications. Maintains and repairs motors, generators, pumps, battery systems, electrical switchboard and related electrical components. Troubleshoots, programs, commissions, repairs, and tests a variety of fire alarm systems including but not limited to, smoke detectors, flow switches, tamper switches, horns, strobes, smoke control, and evacuation systems. Responds to and performs emergency repairs and adjustments. Performs preventative maintenance on electrical systems and equipment. Conducts in-house electrical projects to include planning, layout, and implementation. This includes assisting with campus events by supporting and accommodating electrical needs. Performs lock-out and tag-out procedures. Assists in the maintenance of elevators. Operates all required tools and equipment including but not limited to power equipment and hand tools. Troubleshoots, develops, and implements solutions. Conducts miss dig utility location services. Works effectively with other skilled trades. Keeps necessary records as required. Stays abreast of technology updates related to lighting control systems in order to make operational adjustments and properly maintain systems across campus. Request supplies and equipment as necessary. Performs other duties related to the job classification as assigned. |
