Position Overview
**Internal to current KU faculty only**
KU International Affairs is seeking candidates for the Director of the Center for East Asian Studies.
Founded in 1959, the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) at the University of Kansas is the only East Asian resource center in the Great Plains region. Housed in KU International Affairs, CEAS serves as a regional internationalization hub that supports instruction on East Asia across the curriculum, supports faculty and student research both in and on East Asia and creates opportunities for dissemination of that research, fosters connections between KU and partners in East Asia and among people at KU with an interest in East Asia, and develops East Asia focused programming both on and off campus.
The director will provide leadership and oversight for all center activities as well as meeting their teaching, research, and service responsibilities as a faculty member in their home department.
This position reports to, and serves at the pleasure of, the Associate Vice Provost for International and Global Engagement.
Job Description
Director Responsibilities (50%):
- Provides oversight and leadership for all unit activities, including intellectual and programmatic leadership by developing and coordinating academic, cultural, and public programming.
- Reviews and modifies, in consultation with the unit’s Advisory Committee and affiliated faculty members, the long-range planning for the unit.
- Oversees all internal budgetary, administrative, and personnel matters.
- Supervises and reviews the unit’s faculty and professional, academic, and University support staff.
- Seeks enhancement of unit resources by actively seeking external funding.
- Manages execution of unit grants.
- Develops and enhances research and educational relationships between the unit and other units across the University, as well as with entities outside the University, including partner institutions in East Asia and around the world, and promotes community engagement and public outreach through partnerships at the local, national, and international levels
- Works with CLAS and EALC to provide support for and ensure the long-term sustainability of least commonly taught language programs
- Develops long-term planning for future leadership by cultivating/mentoring faculty members.
- Executes University policy in the unit effectively.
- Represents the unit and reports to KUIA and represents the unit to other University entities.
- Advocates for the unit and advances its strategic visibility within and beyond the University.
Faculty Responsibilities (50%):
20% Teaching/Advising
- Teach two courses per year.
- Advise students, including student mentoring and providing directed readings, as time allows.
- Supervise graduate teaching assistants, as appropriate.
- Serve on committees that supervise and evaluate student progress.
- Engage in scholarly research, including publishing appropriate peer-reviewed books and articles and presenting papers at professional conferences on a regular basis.
- Provide general service to one’s home unit, the University, and the profession.
