| Primary Purpose of Department | The School of Professional (SPS) reports to the division of Academic Affairs, reporting to the Associate Provost. SPS works collaboratively with departments, colleges, and academic support units to ensure integrated partnerships for enrollment growth, student success and faculty effectiveness in teaching. |
| Primary Purpose of Position | The Instructional Designer/Technologist I (IDT I) manages large-scale instructional innovation projects across three universities in the UNC System, led by UNC Charlotte, involving AI-powered personalized and adaptive learning for digital course transformation in Engineering education. This role supports UNC Charlotte’s National Science Foundation (NSF-IUSE 3) Collaborative Research Project, “Elevating Engineering Education Through Adaptive Learning Integration and Training” (NSF), in conjunction with NC State University and NC A&T State University. The position provides project oversight and coordination across multiple departments and units, including faculty, instructional designers/technologists, leadership stakeholders within UNC Charlotte and other UNC system institutions, and graduate assistants. As part of a multi-institutional team, the IDT I will contribute to the design, development, revision, management, and scaling of multiple adaptive AI courses. The role requires travel up to 10% to NC State University in Raleigh and NC A&T State University in Greensboro. The position oversees project development, adaptive courseware development, faculty development, and the implementation of adaptive learning systems within the Engineering Spine, specifically linking Statics, Dynamics I, and Dynamics II. This initiative supports institutional goals to improve student success, shorten time to degree, and reduce DFW rates in core Engineering courses across all three universities’ colleges of engineering. This role is an Instructional Design and Technology position to plan, design, and implement academic technology and/or innovative approaches that directly support faculty effectiveness in instructional design and delivery for student success. This position requires an advanced degree in a teaching or instructional design related field. Given the need to continually advance and promote the use of mixed teaching methodologies that incorporate the use of technology to not only enhance traditional classroom-based instruction but also broaden the basis for online and blended/hybrid courses, this position involves engaging with faculty, departments, and partner units across the university in multiple ways for course consulting, design, delivery, implementation, and evaluation. |

As such, the position requires significant project management skills for strategic instructional initiatives, architecting the use and support of instructional technology, and acting as pedagogical consultant for learning innovation, particularly with AI for personalized and adaptive learning and other innovative approaches for faculty and student success. The ID/T position also requires skills in consultation, support, and training for technology-based instructional systems as well as providing expertise in the use of academic technologies, instructional design, and best practices in teaching and learning. This will include planning, implementing, promoting, managing and evaluating the changes associated with learning environments and instructional systems. The position requires that a substantial proportion of the work commitment is devoted to instructional activities and the direction of educational/academic supportive activities for student success.
