Position Summary Information


Job Description Summary
Fowler School of Engineering Peer Advisors are a valuable academic resource who help students select classes that meet their interest and program requirements; provide information on academic programs, policies, and procedures; and make appointment referrals to campus resources. They also provide advice based on their experiences as students at Chapman University.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to a professional, helpful, welcoming atmosphere and maintain a positive attitude for faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the department.
  • Communicate with FSE students via Slack regarding upcoming advising sessions.
  • Create flyers for advising sessions.
  • Create Zoom meetings and reserve a room for drop-in hours.
  • Communicate with the Faculty within FSE when needed.
  • Hold and manage calendar for in-person and virtual appointments and be available during defined drop-in hours.
  • Respond to all email inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform basic intake analysis to determine if they can assist the student themselves or should refer the student to the appropriate department, college, or campus-level resource.
  • Calendar, track and keep notes for every student meeting. Meetings should be scheduled for 15-30 minutes per student.
  • Explain and guide students on the importance and relevancy of Program Advisors to assist with enrolling in waitlisted classes, major-related questions, incorporating study abroad, and graduating on schedule.
  • Strive constantly to be accurate and honest in all communication.
  • Attend all training sessions and Peer Advisor meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Junior or senior standing with a major with the Fowler School of Engineering
  • GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Well-organized with assigned projects
  • Ability to motivate and inspire peers along their academic journey
  • Openness to share own academic experiences for the encouragement of peers
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality and represent Chapman University in a professional manner
