Scope of Job
Engineering Technician:
To provide high level technical skills to ensure the safe operation of all Machine Shop and Engineering (Research and Educational) Lab equipment. Responsible for the safe distribution, maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental laboratories or related areas and provide user guidance and support of usage.
Senior Engineering Technician:
Oversees and ensures the safe operation of all research and educational lab equipment, the distribution of supplies and maintenance of specialized equipment in departmental laboratories or related areas and techniques of normally used equipment and materials.
Description of Duties
Engineering Technician:
• Monitors the organization and cleanliness of the laboratory or assigned areas.
• Instructs and supervises students and faculty in the safe operation of all applicable tools and research/educational equipment and recommends updates.
• Ensures all established safety standards, regulations and procedures are followed in accordance with state, university and department regulations.
• Responsible for supervising the daily operations of the assigned area, as well as opening and closing the site assigned as per schedule established.
• Maintains and repairs all necessary tools and High-Tech equipment utilized in research and educational laboratory or assigned areas.
• Prepares materials, equipment and instrumentation for use in research and educational laboratories or areas and recommends updates as needed.
• Makes recommendations regarding facilities planning and equipment selection, installation and removal of research and educational equipment.
• Ensures that the college inventory of research and educational laboratory materials and instruments are properly maintained, accounted for and requests purchases when needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Senior Engineering Technician:
  • Oversees the assigned areas and ensures cleanliness of the laboratories.
  • Develops and manages schedules and ensures that laboratories operations are available for usage and operating in an efficient manner.
  • Develops and implements training for students and faculty regarding the safe operation of all applicable tools and approves students after completion of training for use of tools and equipment.
  • Provides technical support and ensures the regular maintenance for all equipment is completed as established within protocol and coordinates accordingly with outside providers.
  • Ensures all established safety standards, regulations and procedures are followed in accordance with state, university and department regulations.
  • Prepares complex materials, equipment and instrumentation for use in research and educational laboratories or areas.
  • Reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations on equipment performance, usage and the purchase of new equipment.
  • Coordinates with lab committees to prepare a budget for consumables, manages all purchases and inventory.
  • Responds to situations where first-line product support has failed to isolate or fix issues in malfunctioning equipment or software.
  • Acts as Liaison to lab committees.
  • Advises faculty and students with facilities planning and equipment selection, installation and removal of equipment.
  • Supervises departmental inventory of laboratory materials and instruments and requests purchases when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Engineering Technician:
Associate degree from a Technical/Trade school in a related field.
Senior Engineering Technician:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Engineering Technician:
N/A
Senior Engineering Technician:
Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited University.
Licenses/Certifications
None.
Required Experience
Engineering Technician:
Two (2) years of related experience, or
Five (5) years of related experience with a High School diploma.
Senior Engineering Technician:
  • Three (3) years of related experience, or
  • Six (6) years of experience with an Associates degree from a Technical/Trade school in a related field.
Preferred Experience
Engineering Technician:
N/A
Senior Engineering Technician:
Experience obtained in a higher education setting.
Equipment
Use of standard office and lab equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/Lab Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability to diagnose and repair equipment. Communicate and work effectively with students, staff and faculty. Gather and analyze test data and other information and draw valid conclusions. Maintain accurate records.
