Description

The Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) is a unique organization within the Department of War (DoW) consisting of teams of researchers embedded at the point of care within multiple Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, the research efforts undertaken focus on the mitigation, treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on translating their findings into clinical practice to improve the care of injured Service members and Veterans. EACE is seeking an eligible post-master's or post-doctoral candidate for this research opportunity.  


As the selected candidate and under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the development and execution of a portfolio of data science-based projects which are aimed at assessing the near- and long-term health outcomes for a cohort of Service members who have sustained traumatic extremity injuries. You will gain education and knowledge in the following areas:
  • Participating in ongoing data science projects and initiatives that will provide exposure to various aspects of data science and its application to research projects within the DOW 
  • Accessing medical information databases within the DoW, Department of Veterans Affairs, and/or the civilian sector.
  • Collecting, processing, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Conducting descriptive and inferential statistical analyses.
  • Contributing to publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Where will I be located?
This opportunity is 100% remote.
 
What is the anticipated start date?
EACE is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are
identified.
 
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may
be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
 
What are the provisions?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by EACE. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline,
experience and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:
  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Training and Travel Allowance

About EACE

The DoD and VA Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) consists of teams embedded at the point of care within multiple world renown Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In-line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, our clinical team focuses on development of clinical outcomes assessment, clinical practice guidelines, and treatment protocols. We are developing a novel system for extremity trauma outcome measures tracking. We focus on traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on tracking outcomes for clinical assessment to improve the care of injured Service members and Veterans.


About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoW. Participants do not enter into an employee/ employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoW or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications
The qualified candidate will have received a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited institution in data sciences, mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, public health, or a related field or will have a degree earned by December 31, 2026. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
 
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
  • Experience in the fields of data sciences, biostatistics, public health or a related field.
