Position Summary
The Director, Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning provides strategic campuswide leadership to advance excellence in teaching and learning and plays a central role in shaping IU’s instructional future, including the opportunities and challenges associated with generative AI and other emerging technologies.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Director oversees CITL’s programs, services, and partnerships; leads a multidisciplinary staff; and collaborates closely with schools, departments, and key units such as Mosaic, FACET, and UITS. The Director will guide major institutional initiative, such as Active Learning @ IUB and AI-enhanced teaching strategies, that support faculty across all disciplines and at scale.
This position requires a visionary, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader with a strong record of innovation and commitment to student success.
The Director position is a non-tenure eligible, 12-month academic appointment. This appointment is renewable based on mutually satisfactory performance and the needs of the department.
Department Information

The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) supports IU Bloomington’s instructional mission by offering faculty development programs, instructional consultations, active learning support, learning technology integration, curriculum and assessment guidance, and collaborative initiatives with campus partners. CITL works to cultivate a campus culture of evidence-based and future-ready teaching.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the Position

30% – FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT
  • Oversee the design and delivery of workshops, consultations, institutes, grants, and professional development programs.
  • Ensure scalable, coordinated support for faculty implementing active learning, new technologies, and curriculum redesign.
  • Provide or supervise instructional guidance for individual faculty, departments, and schools.


25% – CENTER MANAGEMENT

  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor a diverse team of approximately ten direct reports, with additional indirect and dotted-line staff.
  • Oversee budget planning, financial management, and operational efficiency.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.


20% – PARTNERSHIPS AND CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT

  • Build strong collaborations with academic departments, schools, UITS, Mosaic, FACET, and other units supporting teaching and learning.
  • Represent CITL on university committees, task forces, and working groups.
  • Engage with national networks to elevate IU’s visibility in teaching innovation.

20% – STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
  • Provide vision and direction for CITL in alignment with campus priorities for teaching innovation and student success.
  • Lead the development of a campuswide strategy for AI-enhanced teaching, addressing opportunities, risks, and long-term instructional implications.
  • Guide multi-unit initiatives, including Active Learning @ IUB and coordinated faculty development pathways across CITL, Mosaic, FACET, and UITS.
  • Advise campus leadership on trends, challenges, and innovations in teaching and learning.


5% – ASSESSMENT AND DATA-INFORMED IMPROVEMENT

  • Lead the assessment of CITL programs, including data collection, analysis, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Use research, evaluation, and learning analytics to inform program development and instructional strategy.
Basic Qualifications

Minimum Education

Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent in a relevant discipline
Minimum Experience
3-5 years of experience teaching or supporting teaching at the college or university level.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience serving in a leadership role within a center for teaching and learning or equivalent academic unit at a research-intensive or comprehensive university.
  • Expertise in evidence-based teaching practices, active learning, and the integration of instructional technologies.
  • Strong understanding of generative AI’s implications for teaching and learning.
  • Experience designing, delivering, and assessing faculty development programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Record of scholarship, publication, or national engagement in teaching and learning.
  • Experience leading multi-unit strategic initiatives or large-scale faculty development efforts.
  • Background supporting faculty who teach in active learning classrooms or technology-rich environments.
  • Experience with grant writing or external funding.
