Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Location: New Orleans, LA
Summary
The Career Advisor for the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies shall provide professional guidance, consultation, and expertise related to career services, career development, and related technology, which includes but are not limited to the following key responsibilities: Provide direct career services to OGPS populations; Advise graduate students on diverse career options; Serve as a career coach assisting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to develop a personalized plan for the job search process. Provide a high quality career coaching experience to the graduate students OGPS serves and postdoctoral fellows; Continually improve career coaching skills and practices; Assists with workshops as well as other Career Services and Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies’ tasks as needed.
Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has primary responsibility for graduate students and programs at Tulane University, as well as tracking and aiding postdoctoral fellows. The career services arm of the office is responsible for career counseling, programming, and reporting for approximately 1200+ graduate students and 100+ postdoctoral fellows across 50+ departments and multiple graduate schools on campus. The Graduate and Postdoctoral Career Advisor is responsible for providing direct career services and executing the career services team’s curriculum and practices.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Utilizes a welcoming community lens when engaging with students, faculty, campus partners, and employers.
• Ability and desire for continuous improvement and learning, career advising best practices.
• Manage large caseloads of students and provide impactful guidance with limited visits.
• Lead career-related workshops, mini-classes, classroom visits, and one-on-one coaching appointments.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Effective time management skills.
• Great attention to detail.
• Ability to process and easily reference policies and regulations.
• Ability to learn and utilize specific software necessary for academic and career advising practice is required.
• Ability and desire for continuous improvement and learning, career advising best practices.
• Ability to implement career development practices.
• Ability to motivate and inspire students.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends during special events, as needed.
Required Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree
OR
• High School Diploma (or equivalent) with 6 years of experience in an educational setting advising individuals on career and professional development themes or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s Degree
Compensation Information
This position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade 24.
