 The Cage Processing Technician is a critical role that supports animal research at Tulane. This is also great opportunity if you are interested in a career path and growth potential.  
Job Responsibilities:  
  • Operates mechanical cage washing equipment, autoclaves and other sanitizing equipment.  
  • Loads assembled cages onto transport racks in preparation for sterilization by steam autoclave.  
  • Provides basic cage wash duties including the processing of all caging material through mechanical cage and rack washers  
  • Maintains cagewash facilities in a clean and organized manner
  • Maintains facility equipment and performs routine preventative maintenance on cagewash and autoclaves 
  • Disposes of waste materials in a safe and thorough manner as required
  • Sweeps, mops and disinfects cage wash areas at the end of each shift    

NOTE: To provide necessary care for the animals, this position is required to be available on weekends and holidays.  This position is considered essential personnel in the event of an emergency.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.  
  • Ability to read and write in order to maintain records, read instructions, labels, etc.  
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.  
  • Ability to work under environmental conditions that require the use of safety equipment.  
  • Ability to interact and work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner  
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed  
  • Ability to lift items weighting up to 50 pounds and push items weighing up to 200 pounds; able to stand for extended periods of time.  
  • Ability to use industrial equipment such as pallet jacks, floor scrubbing machines, cage and rack washers, and  autoclaves  
  • Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

This position is classified as "non-exempt, hourly" and is assigned to pay grade 20.
