The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University invites applications for the position of Vice Chair of Research. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished investigator and visionary leader to shape and expand a dynamic and growing research enterprise within a collaborative academic medical center. The Vice Chair for Research will play a pivotal role positioning the Department of Pathology as a leader in innovative research, transforming care for patients in their medical journey through science and discovery. Our new leader will share our ambition of driving research from bench to bedside and will be ready to lead with creativity, passion, and vision.
The Vice Chair of Research will provide strategic leadership to advance the department’s research mission, foster innovation, and strengthen its national and international reputation. The successful candidate will work closely with departmental and institutional leadership to build a vibrant and interdisciplinary research environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and grow a high-impact, externally funded research program aligned with departmental priorities
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for research across basic, translational, and clinical domains
  • Promote and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations within the department and across the institution
  • Mentor faculty and trainees, supporting career development and research excellence
  • Enhance research infrastructure, including core facilities, shared resources, and regulatory processes
  • Increase extramural funding from federal, industry, and philanthropic sources
  • Represent and advocate for the department’s research mission internally and externally
  • Engage with community and philanthropic partners to support research initiatives

Basic Qualifications
  • MD, MD/PhD, PhD, or equivalent with a distinguished record of research achievement
  • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Sustained record of extramural funding (e.g., NIH or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated excellence in mentorship and faculty development
  • Proven leadership experience in an academic or research setting
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and unite stakeholders with different objectives
