Job Summary/Description
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Angelo State University seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor of Music with a specialization in High Brass starting in August 2026. This full-time, tenure-track position calls for an individual with a commitment to undergraduate music education with the ability to teach applied trumpet and French horn, courses in high brass pedagogy and literature, brass methods, and academic music courses such as Elementary Music Methods, Music History, Music Theory, Aural Skills, and/or core service courses such as Introduction to Music.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
  • Teach applied trumpet and French horn, high brass pedagogy, brass methods, and assigned academic music courses (e.g., Elementary Music Methods, Music History, Music Theory, Aural Skills, and/or Introduction to Music).
  • Advise undergraduate music students on academic progress, degree planning, and professional development.
  • Recruit and retain students for the Music Program through outreach, relationship‑building, and participation in program activities.
  • Attend and actively participate in departmental and Music Program meetings, events, concerts, and performances.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees as assigned.
  • Maintain a record of ongoing professional, scholarly, and/or creative activity.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Knowledge
    • Comprehensive knowledge of high brass performance, pedagogy, and literature.
    • Understanding of best practices in student recruitment and retention within a music program.

    Skills
    • Performance proficiency on trumpet, French horn, or both.
    • Skill in teaching applied trumpet and French horn across varying proficiency levels.
    • Skill in teaching high brass pedagogy, literature, and brass methods.

    Abilities
    • Ability to effectively recruit, support, and retain students in the music program.
    • Ability to deliver high-quality instruction in multiple high brass areas.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Terminal degree in Music (DMA, DA, PhD, or equivalent).
    • ABD candidates with a documented completion date by August 2026 may be considered.
    • Minimum of two years of collegiate teaching experience, or equivalent professional experience.

    Physical Requirements
    Standing/sitting, bending, lifting, carrying as necessary per the job duties.
