Job Summary

The Department of History at the University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Instruction in US History beginning in August 2026. The successful candidate will primarily teach freshman-level US History to 1877 and US History since 1877 courses; the possibility of an occasional an upper-division US History course may also become available as needed by the History Department. Review of applications begins April 1, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Teach 4/4 course load of student-facing and online courses at the undergraduate level. 
  • The candidate will also oversee assessment of Core Curriculum courses, working with the Department Chair and the College of Arts and Sciences assessment team
  • Maintain regular on-campus presence.
  • Attend departmental meetings.


Required Qualifications 

  • Ph.D. in History by July 2026

Preferred Qualifications 

  • A background in Revolutionary America and the Constitution is preferred

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
