Job Summary

The Department of Psychology and Counseling at The University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Counseling to start in the Fall of 2026. This is a full-time tenure-track position with a nine-month academic year appointment in the clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) program in the Department of Psychology and Counseling within the College of Education and Psychology at the University of Texas at Tyler.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Pursuing an active scholarly research agenda.
  • Teaching graduate courses in counseling.
  • Supervising CMHC students in their internship and practicum coursework.
  • Advising counseling students. 
  • Maintain regular on-campus presence. 
  • Attend departmental meetings.


Required Qualifications 

  • An earned a doctorate in counselor education (preference given to applicants with a degree earned from a CACREP-accredited program) by August, 2026 (we will review and consider candidates who are currently ABD).
  • Professional experience and research expertise in counseling and supervision in clinical settings. 
  • Evidence of university teaching and research activity appropriate for an assistant professor candidate. 
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to conduct a focused and sustained program of research and scholarship, and experience teaching graduate students. 
  • Additionally, applicants should have a license or be certification/license eligible.

  • Closing date: Screening of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. We would like the new faculty member to join our team in August 2026.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
