Overview
The Assistant Electrical Project Engineer will be involved in all aspects of electrical systems on campus from high-voltage 69 kV substation equipment to low-voltage 24 Vdc plant control systems. The assistant engineer will assist a senior engineer in managing electrical projects using campus design standards, industry codes and standards, power system analysis software, and project management budgeting/scheduling tools. In addition to project work, this position assists in field work to inspect/review large construction project activities, troubleshoot electrical equipment issues, manage equipment maintenance and repairs, and safely perform switching on high and low voltage equipment during routine and emergency operations.
The assistant engineer is a member of the Electrical Engineering (EE) Group, a key component of the University Facilities Engineering and Campus Energy Department, and reports to the Director, EE Group. The EE Group is responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of the University electrical distribution infrastructure to insure a reliable and efficient electrical power supply to campus facilities.
This position must embody the core values essential to the Facilities Organization : teamwork, innovation, integrity, inclusiveness, respect, and sustainability. The Electrical Project Engineer collaborates with administrative leadership within Facilities to support the Campus.
Responsibilities
Project Administration
- Assists in implementation and managing campus electrical projects (typically < $1M).
- Works with Electrical Project Engineer And/or Director to learn campus standards and ensure implementation of design standards via design & submittal reviews.
- Learns and utilizes NEC, UL, NETA, ANSI, and IEEE Standards as related to commercial and industrial power systems.
- Learns and utilizes power system analysis software for load flow, short circuit, selectivity, and arc flash studies.
- Collaborates with the engineering team on University electrical issues, especially to the Utility Plant, Maintenance and Construction departments. Collaborate preventative maintenance electrical outage work with building occupants, shops, and contractors.
- Utilizes AutoCAD to create design documents for construction.
Field Work
- Assists in Troubleshooting campus electrical problems which can include power cable and distribution equipment failures, circuit breaker and protective relay trips, and equipment problems in high/medium/low voltage substations and cogeneration plant; field evaluate, recommend, and implement solutions
- Participates in electrical equipment emergency repairs and power restoration plans including nights and weekends.
- Utilizes campus SCADA and metering software for operations, troubleshooting, and energy usage reporting.
- Participates in electrical field inspections of new construction.
- Witness high voltage testing and switching operations.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- State-issued valid driver's license.
- Able to access all electrical equipment in campus substations and buildings. This includes climbing 24-foot ladders.
- Able to enter confined space areas such as underground electric manholes and transformer vaults.
- Must be available to work as required by the project schedule or emergency.
- Position is essential as defined by Human Resources and Facilities policies.
- Learn, understand and apply safe electrical and other construction work practices.
- Team Player: A Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Eagerness to learn and contribute to various electrical engineering projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Field experience with utility or industrial power plant operations and electric utility distribution systems.
- Experience with SKM or ETAP power systems analysis software.
- Experience with AutoCAD
- Engineer in Training Certificate
- Bachelors in electrical engineering strongly preferred.
- Course work in Power System
