Summary
The Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (URAF) seeks an intellectually engaged, collaborative scholar–administrator to support undergraduate research and fellowships programming. This role is ideal for an experienced scholar and mentor who is passionate about program building and who wishes to contribute meaningfully to the scholarly life of the university beyond the classroom.This position plays a central role in advancing a campus-wide culture of mentored research and creative inquiry. It oversees key undergraduate research programs—including the NTC Grants Program, the Undergraduate Thesis Program, and the Summer Research Program (SRP)—while working closely with faculty, departments, and students across disciplines to design, support, and assess high-impact research experiences.The role combines intellectual leadership with hands-on program administration. Responsibilities include advising students on research design and scholarly communication; collaborating with faculty on the development of undergraduate research opportunities; and contributing to strategic initiatives that strengthen faculty capacity for mentoring undergraduate researchers. The position also participates in the development of new programs, assessment practices, and partnerships that advance inclusive excellence in undergraduate scholarship.An ideal candidate will bring a strong grounding in academic research (particularly within the liberal arts), the ability to communicate effectively across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, and a demonstrated commitment to mentoring, equity, and student intellectual growth.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong understanding of academic research and creative inquiry, including undergraduate research design, mentoring, and scholarly communication, preferably within the liberal arts or interdisciplinary contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor undergraduate students across stages of intellectual and professional development.
• Experience designing, managing, and assessing academic or co-curricular programs, including grants, fellowships, or research initiatives.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students across disciplines and academic units.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex academic and administrative information clearly.
• Strong organizational and project-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple initiatives, timelines, and priorities simultaneously.
• Proficiency with standard office and collaboration technologies (e.g., Microsoft Office and shared academic systems).
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and work independently within a complex institutional environment.
Required Education and/or Experience
• Master’s degree with a minimum of two years of increasing levels of leadership and administrative complexity in a higher education setting, academic research support, or student mentoring required.
OR
• Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years of experience working at a university with increasing levels of responsibility.
• Demonstrated experience working with faculty and undergraduate students in research-intensive or academically rigorous settings.
Preferred Qualifications
• College-level teaching experience or equivalent mentoring experience.
• Demonstrated success in developing, implementing, and assessing academic or co-curricular programs.
• Experience working with honors programs, fellowship programs, or high-achieving undergraduate populations.
• Familiarity with nationally competitive fellowships, undergraduate grants, or external funding landscapes.
• Evidence of strategic thinking, intellectual curiosity, and sustained engagement with questions of undergraduate learning and research.
• Ability to lead programs with confidence, demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional improvement, and maintain a high degree of receptivity to collaborative peer review, and balance collaboration with independent decision-making.
Compensation Information
This position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade 25.
