The Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University seeks a Field Research Engineer to support ongoing erosion, sediment control, and stormwater research. This position is responsible for executing controlled trials at an erosion and sediment testing facility in Wooster, Ohio, including full‑scale performance testing of a sediment trap and basin system. The role combines field operations, data collection, equipment management, and engineering analysis to support research across the state.
Key Responsibilities
Field Research & Operations
- Execute controlled field trials at the Wooster erosion and sediment testing facility.
- Oversee simulated performance testing of a full-scale sediment trap and basin.
- Coordinate and direct undergraduate research assistants during field activities.
- Install and evaluate retrofit materials (e.g., baffles) in sediment control structures.
- Operate pumps to convey water from an on-site storage pond to research infrastructure.
- Collect water quality samples under a range of controlled conditions.
- Maintain an inventory of sieved soil required for simulating construction-site runoff.
- Perform labor-intensive tasks including heavy lifting, equipment setup, and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Data Collection & Analysis
- Analyze water quality data, including turbidity and total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations.
- Document findings, maintain detailed field logs, and support preparation of research summaries.
Modeling & Engineering Design
- Conduct HEC-RAS modeling of a constructed wetland located in southwest Ohio.
- Support engineering design of stormwater control practices for research projects across multiple Ohio locations.
- Collaborate with faculty, graduate students, and research partners to support project objectives.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental or agricultural engineering (or related field), or equivalent experience.
- 0 years of relevant experience required.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental or agricultural engineering (or related field).
- 0–2 years of experience in field research, hydrology, water resources, or erosion and sediment control.
- Familiarity with erosion and sediment control measures, field instrumentation, or pump/flow systems.
- Experience or coursework related to hydrologic and hydraulic modeling (HEC-RAS preferred).
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors and perform labor-intensive physical tasks (including heavy lifting and operating pumps or other machinery).
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Interest in applied research supporting environmental protection and sustainable construction practices.
