Description
This opportunity focuses on developing new methods, metrics, approaches, and techniques for the forensic analysis of seized drugs. Seized drug analysis is the most frequently requested forensic analysis throughout the country, accounting for over 1 million examinations every year. To keep pace with these requests laboratories often seek new approaches, methods, or techniques that will speed up analysis times, provide increased information to the chemist, and/or simplify data interpretation while enhancing data quality. One of the goals of the forensic program at NIST is to assist local, state, and federal laboratories in developing new approaches and methodologies through collaborative engagements. Projects that would fit into these opportunity include, but are not limited to, developing new approaches to analyze seized drugs, creating methods or approaches that will increase the speed of analysis while also increasing data quality, and establishing procedures that will increase chemist safety. Other important project areas that could be addressed include challenges with isomer differention, analysis of low concentration samples, and strategies for the identification of unknown compounds. Projects aimed at obtaining complete chemical profiles of drug samples for forensic intelligence purposes are also of interest. Through this opportunity, collaboration with other NIST laboratories as well as local, state, and federal forensic laboratories will be possible. Due to the cross-disciplinary nature of this project, backgrounds in engineering, chemistry, physics, forensics, statistics, and computer programming are applicable.
