Description of the workplace

Senior Lecturer Gemma Atkinson is the research group leader of the Protein Evolution group at the Department of Experimental Medical Science, Lund University. Her research group works with computational sequence and structural analysis of microbial genomes and proteins.

Project description

The project involves using and developing bioinformatic tools for analysis of microbial genome sequences. A particular focus is on further development of our FlaGs tool, the web server version of which can be found at https://server.atkinson-lab.com/webflags .

Work duties and areas of responsibility

The position is fixed-term for one year. Employment as a project assistant is intended as an initial step in a research career and as an opportunity to further deepen and broaden research competence.

Your work tasks will include developing and applying bioinformatic tools for analysis of microbial genome sequences, contributing to the development and maintenance of FlaGs and its web server for comparative genome analysis, developing Python-based tools and code for retrieval and processing of publicly available genomic data, and participating in the analysis of microbial genomic data, including phage biology and microbial immune systems.

QualificationsRequirements for the position:

  • Education to at least Master’s level in a relevant field.
  • Previous research experience in phylogenetic analysis of viruses or bacteria.
  • Experience in sequencing and genome assembly.
  • Very strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience in developing user-friendly software for comparative genome analysis.
  • Experience using the Swedish national infrastructure for high-performance computing (NAISS).
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Great importance will be placed on personal qualities. The tasks require that you are structured in your work and able to work independently.

Meritorious for the position:

  • Familiarity with phage biology and microbial immune systems.
  • Experience developing code for retrieval of publicly available genomic data, for example from NCBI databases.

Further information

The position is a special fixed-term position for 1 year, full-time. The desired start date is as soon as possible or by agreement.
