Description
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our research team working on advanced Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for future 6G systems. If you feel that you fit the description below, we really look forward to your application!
The research will be carried out in the context of the PIONEERS-6G project, a large collaborative initiative funded by the European Union under the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) (see this news article from the University website ). In this project, Karlstad University leads a consortium of leading European universities, research institutes, and industrial partners to develop future 6G-IoT platforms, offering a unique opportunity to work within a large-scale European research effort at the forefront of 6G innovation.
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other researchers in the Distributed Intelligent Systems and Communications (DISCO) group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. DISCO is a leading, internationally renowned research group in the field of mobile communication systems and services. Multiple research projects funded by European and national research organisations have created a highly innovative team of experts, with excellent research networks and working conditions for independent scientific work. Research within the DISCO group is based on a collaborative culture. Through interdisciplinary research in our major research areas, as well as in joint projects with external partners from both academia and industry, we contribute towards tomorrow’s technology and society. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to this research environment in an open and collaborative way, as well as collaborate with our partners outside DISCO.
Due to the postdoctoral appointment’s nature as a career-development position for junior researchers, we are looking for candidates who have completed their PhD no more than three years before the application deadline.
Duties
In this position, your main task will be to contribute to research activities within the PIONEERS-6G project, including the design of energy-efficient IoT devices, the development of AI-native multi-connectivity schemes across terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, and the performance evaluation of these solutions in challenging IoT scenarios.
The position involves both theoretical and experimental research, including algorithm design, simulation, and prototype-based evaluation, as well as dissemination through high-quality scientific publications and project documentation, international collaboration, and presentation of obtained results in appropriate scientific venues and project meetings. Participation in teaching, e.g., through contributions in courses or supervision of student theses and projects on topics relevant to the project, is a relevant part of this position.
For the above tasks, you will collaborate closely with the DISCO members involved in PIONEERS-6G and with our project partners. Good English skills are essential as English is the working language in the project consortium.
You are expected to collaborate with the wider community for a mutual exchange, as well as work towards ensuring that the knowledge and expertise available at the university is of benefit to society.
To contribute to a positive work environment and further the department’s activities, you are expected to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.
Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the postdoctoral appointment, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or have equivalent qualifications from abroad. The PhD must be completed before a decision to appoint an applicant is made. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the application deadline.
Qualifications obtained earlier may be considered if there are special grounds, such as sick leave, parental leave, clinical service, service as a union representative, military service or similar, or service/assignment of relevance to the appointment.
Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a requirement as it is the working language of the project.
Assessment criteria
Special weight will be given to:
Knowledge of wireless communications, 5G and 5G-Advanced mobile and IoT systems and devices, statistics and AI/ML.
Experiences in practical network measurements and in software development and programming with Matlab, Python, and/or C.
International work experience or experience in national and international networks.
Experience in collaborating with the wider community, as well as communicating research findings and results of development work.
Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, sound judgement, taking responsibility, commitment and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students, and the intention to be a present and active part of the research environment.
Teaching experience in wireless communications, mobile systems and/or AI/ML is considered as a valuable qualification.
Terms
Fixed-term full-time employment of 3 years, starting at the earliest convenience.
Application

- CV
- cover letter describing the applicant’s qualifications and research interests in relation to the duties of the position
- list of publications (in multi-authored publications, the role of the applicant must be specified)
- copy of PhD degree or information on when it is expected to be completed
- copy of doctoral thesis and other relevant publications (up to 10)
- An account of language skills
- two references, at least one of which is a current or former supervisor.
