The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. SciLifeLab (SciLifeLab ) is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource hosted by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The center also collaborates with several other universities.
The employment will be placed at the Department of biochemistry and biophysics, at Stockholm university. More information about us, please visit: www.dbb.su.se .
Project description
The candidate will develop machine learning (ML) strategies, primarily revolving around interpretable ML and generative AI, to study complex biological processes. This project combines timely analytical challenges with deep rooted applications in life science. We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in either engineering/computer science/physics/mathematics. Experience with ML implementation (ideally interpretable ML and/or generative AI) is required.
The Selected postdoctor will be joining the Computational Microscopy for Cell Biology (CMCB) lab led by Dr. J. Griffié, which is primarily composed of engineers, physicists and mathematicians. The lab is based at SciLifeLab in Stockholm, a vibrant and dynamic science hub, with a particular focus in multidisciplinary research. The CMCB laboratory aims more specifically at developing cutting-edge data/image analysis as well as modelling strategies to answer fundamental biology issues with advanced light microscopy data. The lab’s research scope ranges from reinforcement learning for drug design, interpretable ML pipelines for cancer research and diagnosis as well as graph neural networks for microscopy.
Main responsibilities
The position involves taking an active part in CMCB lab’s daily research. The succesful postdoctor will be expected to lead independently their research project as well as collaborate with members of the team on research projects that fit their qualifications and interests. Primarly, the selected candidate will design and implement novel ML/statistical approaches dedicated to biological applications with mostly image/omics data.
Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
Assessment criteria
It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in data analysis/ processing. Expertise in ML implementation, ideally interpretable ML and/or generative AI, is required. Application to bioinformatics is a plus.
About the employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
