Offer Description
Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research in the Additive Manufacturing of non-weldable Ni-base superalloys? This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral position at the Division of Materials and Manufacture , Department of Department of Mechanical Engineering , focused on innovative research in metal additive manufacturing.
About us
At the Department of Mechanical Engineering , we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact – shaping a resilient and sustainable world.
In the division of Materials and Manufacture you’ll join a friendly, international team passionate about shaping the future of materials and production. Our research spans innovative materials, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable solutions – always with real-world impact in mind, and with strong ties to industry. If you are interested in working experimentally and making a difference in the areas of materials and manufacturing, we look forward to receiving your application.
About the research project
The position is focused on development of robust AM and post-AM processing of non-weldable Ni-base superalloys and Ti-alloys using recent advances in laser processing and in-situ process control. Position is connected to the competence centre Centre for Additive Manufacture – Metal that is focused on material and process development for powder-based metal AM.
Your major responsibility is to perform your own research as part of the CAM2 and spinoff projects within topic of PBF-LB processing of Ni-base superalloys and Ti-alloys. The position involves coordinating specific research projects in the frame of AM, collaborating within academia, industry and with society at large in the frame of CAM2 .
Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory:
- A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Experience in metal additive manufacturing (PBF-LB), microstructure characterization with focus on Ni-based superalloys and/or Ti-alloys (SEM, EDS, EBSD, TEM, etc.)
- Personal competences in accordance with the requirements profile including specification (e.g. social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others)
You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
- Experience in mechanical testing relevant to Ni-base superalloys and Ti-alloys (tensile, fatigue, creep etc.), other AM technologies (PBF-EB, DED), in-situ process monitoring during PBF-LB (optical tomography, melt pool monitoring, etc.), thermodynamic simulations, advanced materials characterisation (TEM, APT, XCT, LSI, etc.)…
What you will do
- You will work on development of robust PBF-LB processing for non-weldable Ni-base superalloys and Ti-alloys using recent advances in PBF-LB processing (laser shaping, pulsed laser, etc) as well as in-situ process monitoring (optical tomography, melt pool monitoring, processing gas monitoring, etc.).
- Special focus will be placed on post-AM treatment (heat treatment and hot isostatic cracking) to minimize/avoid cracking and optimize microstructure and properties.
- You will be working with hands-on manufacturing, microstructure characterization using advanced tools (such as SEM, EDS, EBSD, TEM, APT, etc.) and mechanical testing (tensile, fatigue, creep etc.). CALPHAD tools such as Thermo-Calc and JMatPro that will be used for tailoring of alloy composition and development of post-AM heat treatment.
- Supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent
- Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level
The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
