Pushing the boundaries of knowledge in physics, astronomy, nanoscience and microtechnology
Basic Science is the groundwork of research and provides the foundation for progress in many fields. It addresses nature’s most fundamental questions and is driven by curiosity and the urge to understand the underlying principles, laws, and forces that govern the world around us.
Chalmers will recruit one assistant professor in Basic Science related to physics, astronomy, nanoscience or microtechnology. The successful candidate is expected to establish and lead an internationally competitive research program and to contribute to high-quality education at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.
Research and education in Basic Science at Chalmers address questions in physics and astronomy, as well as in nanoscience and microtechnology, including areas such as astrophysical observations, quantum science, photonics, and materials and phenomena at the nanoscale.
Within and across these fields, we develop new theoretical, experimental, and technological approaches to tackle the most important scientific frontiers and push the boundaries of knowledge. Supported by this vision, our ambition is to perform world-leading research aiming at ground-breaking discoveries.
Conducting research at Chalmers provides great opportunities for cross-disciplinary, national and international collaboration, as well as close links with the University of Gothenburg within an excellent research environment. Researchers also benefit from access to advanced research infrastructures, including the Myfab cleanroom facilities for advanced nanofabrication, the Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory (CMAL ) for state-of-the-art materials characterization, and Onsala Space Observatory , a national research infrastructure for radio astronomy and space geodesy. Advanced computational resources are available through Chalmers e-Commons and national infrastructure such as NAISS . This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a strong and growing research environment and to shape future developments in Basic Science through cutting-edge research and collaboration.

- Applying for external research funding and building national and international collaborations.
- Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels (typically 20–30% of full time), with opportunities to develop new courses and contributing to Chalmers’ goals for sustainability, utilization, and academic citizenship.
Qualifications
You hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, obtained within seven years before the application deadline. Exceptions to the seven-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave or military service.
You have demonstrated independent, high-quality research and show strong potential to build an internationally competitive research program.
