Offer Description

The world requires outstanding technical universities to address the multifaceted global challenges that we face today. Chalmers University of Technology is on an ambitious path to expand the frontiers of science and technology to meet those challenges.

As part of this ambition, Chalmers seeks curious, creative and highly promising individuals to join us as tenure-track Assistant Professors. We are looking for candidates with the potential to establish internationally recognised research programs and who seek scientific freedom to pursue ambitious research agendas.

The position is a five-year tenure-track appointment with a competitive start-up package including funding for personnel, equipment, and operational costs. You will also get relocation support, mentoring, and leadership training to support your development as an independent research leader and educator. Through Chalmers’ cross-departmental Areas of Advance, you will have opportunities to build collaborations and networks both within the university and with leading industrial and societal partners.

You are invited to apply and share your research vision and plans to achieve your goals. At Chalmers, we value an inclusive and respectful academic culture and welcome applications from individuals of all genders, backgrounds, and identities.

The applications will be reviewed during May – August, and interviews are planned for mid-September to mid-October 2026. Starting date is flexible but preferably not later than the first half of 2027.

Advancing materials for a sustainable future

Materials science plays a key role in addressing many of today’s societal challenges, from sustainable energy systems and healthcare solutions to circular use of resources and advanced manufacturing. By understanding and designing materials with tailored properties, researchers enable technological innovations that support a sustainable future.

Chalmers will recruit one Assistant Professor in Materials Science. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research and education in advanced materials and to strengthen our interdisciplinary research environment, addressing key challenges related to sustainable energy systems, health applications and the green transition.

Research and education in materials science at Chalmers cover all key elements of advanced materials research, including theory and modelling, synthesis, characterisation and evaluation of material properties. Our research is organised around three main thematic areas: materials for energy applications, materials for health, and materials for green transitions. Examples include materials for solar energy, batteries, fuel cells and catalysis, antibacterial and antiviral materials, lightweight materials based on polymer composites or superalloys, sustainable construction materials and materials from renewable feedstocks.

Within and across these areas, we develop new materials, processes and analytical methods that enable advances in technology, industry and sustainable societal development.

Materials science at Chalmers is a national strategic research area and an internationally recognised research environment with strong connections to both fundamental research and industrial applications. The research community includes around 70 senior researchers from the departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Life Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Microtechnology and Nanoscience, as well as collaborations with the University of Gothenburg. Our researchers benefit from access to state of art research infrastructure including the Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory (CMAL) , Myfab  cleanroom facilities and national infrastructures such as MAX IV , ARTEMI , the Swedish NMR Centre and NAISS . Chalmers also plays a leading role in major national initiatives such as the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE) and the Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) . This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a strong and growing research environment and to shape future developments in Material Science through cutting-edge research and collaboration.
