Project general description

We’re looking for a Master’s or doctoral student to join as a Research Assistant (RA) in the ERC-funded project, ‘SINGLE – Understanding the Demography and Stratification of Singlehood in Europe’ in the Centre d’Estudis Demogràfics (CED). SINGLE is a comparative project that examines the population and social dynamics of singlehood across Europe—both within and between countries.
 

Function description

The RA will work closely with the Principal Investigator (Dr. Ariane Ophir) and primarily support the project’s demographic component, which provides population estimation and harmonization of singlehood indicators across time, countries, and data sources. Main responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and analyzing large-scale, cross-sectional comparative micro data (e.g., census)
  • Harmonizing and documenting indicators, measures, and survey instruments
  • Assisting with literature review related to family demography
  • Supporting other research tasks related to the SINGLE project
     

Requirements

  • Completed or enrolled in a Master in Sociology, Demography, Political Science, Economics, Statistics or a related social science field
  • Experience analyzing cross-sectional datasets using Stata/R
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to details

Desirable (not required, but highly valued):

  • Previous experience working as a quantitative RA or intern
  • Previous experience working with census or nationally representative secondary surveys
  • General interest in family demography
     

Conditions of employment

  • Contract type: Part-time (10-12 hours/week) research contract starting on 15 April 2026
  • Duration: 9 months (April-December)
  • Gross annual salary: €4.400-5.280 (depending on the number of hours per week and duration of contract)
  • Workplace: The position is based at the Centre d’Estudis Demogràfics (Barcelona). While remote work is possible, the selected candidate must reside in Spain during the contract period and hold valid authorization to work in Spain (DNI/NIE/TIE) at the start of employment.
