The Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Maszyn Przepływowych im Roberta Szewalskiego Polskiej Akademii Nauk)
is the leading organization in the field of fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, thermodynamics and heat exchange, laser measurement techniques, machinery dynamics, tribology and diagnostics of energy production machinery. The thematic orientation of its research concerns aerodynamics, solid mechanics and energy conversion in flows including plasma and lasers.
Participation in the design and optimization of integrated energy systems, including renewable energy sources and energy storage systems.Development of predictive models and soft sensors for monitoring the technical condition and operational parameters of energy infrastructure (e.g., turbine components).Research on advanced deep learning techniques, including architectures based on GRU, LSTM, attention mechanisms, and hybrid models.Implementation of real-time predictive models (soft sensors) in power systems for thermodynamic process monitoring and control (e.g., thermal stress control in steam turbines). Involvement in interdisciplinary research projects combining mechanical engineering, computer science, energy systems, and economics

Skills/Qualifications

A PhD degree in technical sciences, specializing in mechanical engineering (PhD Eng.).

Documented experience in scientific research related to thermomechanics, power engineering, or related engineering fields.

Experience in modeling and optimizing integrated energy systems, including the use of RES and energy storage technologies.

Knowledge of economic aspects related to energy transition, energy efficiency, and resource utilization.
Strong expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and advanced time series modeling

Additional education in economics (e.g., a completed Master’s or postgraduate degree in economics, finance, or energy management) will be considered an asset.
 


Specific Requirements

* Proficiency in Python ecosystem (NumPy, Pandas, TensorFlow, scikit-learn)

* Experience with optimization methods: exact methods (MIP/MILP using PuLP) and heuristics (e.g., genetic algorithms)

* Solid understanding of statistics, probability theory, data exploration, dimensionality reduction, classical ML algorithms (regression, classification, clustering), and ensemble methods (Random Forest, XGBoost)

* Expert knowledge of deep learning for sequential data (LSTM, Bi-GRU, Attention mechanisms); familiarity with other time series architectures (1D CNN, Transformers, autoencoders)

* Ability to design, tune, and deploy deep learning models

* Experience implementing ML models in Python with TensorFlow and scikit-learn

* Experience integrating ML models in real-time environments or industrial automation systems

* Experience working with large datasets and SQL databases

Benefits

We offer a Post-Doctoral position (research associate) in the Energy Conversion Department, IMP PAN Gdańsk, Poland (www.imp.gda.pl/en ) A full time (40 h/week) employment is funded, starting by a three-month trial period for new employees. The gross salary is 6841 PLN/month (indicatively: equivalent to ~1120 €/month net income, subject to some variation depending on tax regulations and on the EUR/PLN exchange rate). There are no constraints as to the nationality of the applicant; however, no extra mobility allowance neither family allowance can be granted, no visa fee refund, etc.

- Master’s or postgraduate degree in economics, finance, or energy management) will be considered an asset
